Iowa School Board
Halts Distribution of
Sectarian Literature

DAVENPORT, Iowa, (JTA)—
The Davenport school board halt-
ed distribution of the New Testa-
ment to school children follow-
ing a protest by Rabbi Abram - V.
Goodman of the local Temple
Emanuel.
In a letter to the school board,
Rabbi Goodman pointed out that
"the distribution of sectarian
literature violates the historic
separation between church and
state" in this country. He added
that although acceptance of the
New Testament was voluntary,
children who did not take it
were embarrassed.
Permission for school children
to accept copies of the New Test-
ament on a voluntary basis offers
a precedent for the dissemina-
tion of literature by other groups,
the letter pointed out. "The
Knights of Columbus might dis-
tribute Catholic catechisms, and
the Bnai Brith Jewish prayer
books," Rabbi Goodman argued.
"This opens the door to even
more fantastic operations in the
name of religion. Since the school
system is nonsectarian. there is
no justification for the division
of children according to religious
backgrounds in the classrooms."

Family Films Record
Details of Festive Days

Along with a host of other GIs
during the last days of the war,

Detroit's Sid Siegal was mulling
over an idea for a new business
which could utilize his talents
and college training.
The result of his planning is a
specialized service, Family Film
Productions, which photographs
in natural-color motion pictures
a wedding, a banquet, debutante's
ball, birthday party or confirma-
tion day. •
- The customary wedding film
begins with the bride putting the
last touches to her costume and
follows her to the altar where
the marriage vows are pro-
nounced. Next, we see the couple
greeting guests at the reception
or banquet hall. The record of
this important day is completed
with professional titles and d'
"shot" of .the couple boarding
their train or plane as the honey-
moon begins. •
These methods are adapted for
the other occasions covered above
and each film is given individual
treatment to insure originality as
well as faithful recording.

Truman Commends
Jewish Committee
For Bigotry Fight

NEW YORK—Praising the 40-
year campaign of the American

Jewish Committee against bigo-
try and its affirmation of the
"American way of equality for
all, regardless of race or creed,"
President Truman has sent a
message of greeting to Judge
Joseph M. Proskauer. president
of the AJC on the occasion of the
committee's 40th annual meet-
ing, in the Hotel Commodore,
Jan. 24 to 26.
President Truman's letter to
Judge Proskauer states in part:
"The American Jewish Com-
mittee's long and honorable
campaign against bigotry and
prejudice. its defense of the civil
and religious rights of Jews, its
intervention in behalf of the
rights of members of other faiths,
its promotion of good will and
mutual respect among Jews and
Christians, form a record of which
we may all be proud.
". . . on the public spirit of
such organizations as the Amer-
ican Jewish Committee and its
leaders, we depend for reinforce-
ment of the democratic way of
life. Your concern that the hu-
man rights clauses be inserted in
the United Nations Charter is but
or of your many acts of devo-
tion to the vision of a better
world. May you continue on the
road you have traversed for 40
years." •
