Gen. Hershey Praises JWB
for Contributions in
World War H
NEW YORK, (JTA) — One of
every 25 members of the U. S.
armed forces was Jewish and
their records are typical of
America's participation in World
War II, Maj. Gen. Hershey, direc-
tor of the Selective Service, told
a dinner at the Waldorf Astoria
to mark the completion of the
gathering of statistics on Jewish
participation in the last war. The
record will, appear this spring in
two volumes entitled "American
Jews in World War II."
The data gathered by commit-
tees in Jewish communities
throughout the country under the
direction of the Jewish Welfare
Board's Bureau of War Records
shows more than 500,000 Jewish
men and women served in the
U. S. armed forces.
Gen. Hershey paid tribute to
the far-flung - activities of the
JWB during the war and con-
veyed the "greetings and best
wishes" of President Truman.
"The President is deeply aware of
the contributions made by the
National Jewish Welfare Board,"
Gen. Hershey said.
Other speakers at the dinner
included Frank L. Weil, president
of the JWB, Dr. Louis I_ Dub-
lin, chairman of the JWB's Bu-
reau of War Records and vice-
president of the Metropolitan
Life Insurance Co.; Dr. Samuel
C. Kohs, director of the bureau
and an outstanding statistician,
and Ralph K. Guinzburg, assist-
ant secretary of the JWB.
Nazi Warsaw Chief
Accused by Witness
Despite His Plea
WARSAW (JTA)—The Nazi
extermination of Warsaw's Jews
was "the most horrible crime in
the history of mankind," Ludwig
Fischer, Nazi governor of War-
saw, under whose direction thou-
sands of Jews were murdered
and deported to death camps, tes-
tified during his trial before a
Polish Peoples Court.
Fischer alleged he no longer
believed in the Nazi theory of
racial superiority and stated
when he saw what was being
done to the Warsaw Jews, he
begged to be relieved of his post
and sent to the front.
A Jewish witness, Mieczylaw
Maszlanko, one of the most prom-
inent attorneys in pre-war Po-
land, who spent several years in
the Warsaw ghetto and the Mai-
danek and Oswiecim camps, tes-
tified Fischer exceeded even the
orders issued to him by the gov-
ernor-general of Poland, Hans
Frank, inflicting the most bar-
barous punishment on the Jews.
Gestapo leader Joseph Meis-
singer was charged by the wit-
ness with being equally respons-
ible for the atrocities.
Criticize FEPC Group
For Unauthorized Use
Of Names of Backers
Sharp criticism of the Com-
mittee for a State FEPC for un-
authorized use of names of FEPC
supporters in its call for a con-
ference in Lansing has been
lodged by four Detroiters, includ-
ing Dr. A. M. Hershman and
Rabbi Joshua Sperka, who have
been prominent in the drive for
state FEPC legislation.
"We can certainly have no ob-
jection to any group concerning
itself with the cause of fair em-
ployment legislations": the group
declared. "However, we can in-
sist that any group, with which
our names are associated, no mat-
ter how worthy its intention, be
thoroughly democratic and not
subject to outside influences.
"With this in mind we have
chosen to press the case for State
FEPC legislation through the
medium of the Michigan Council
for Fair Employment legislation."
