Admission of Jews to Palestine
WASHINGTON, (JPS)—Gen. George C. Marshall, new Secretary of State, is reported
to be a staunch supporter of American policy for the admission of 100,000 Jews into Pales-
tine. It is pointed out that Gen. Hildring, in charge of DP arrangements in the U. S. zone
and reportedly one of the high American officers who have mapped plans for the transfer
of Jews from the U. S. zone and their transhipment to Palestine, is a close friend of the
new Secretary of State and had kept him informed of the situation so that Gen. Marshall
is by no means a "tyro" on the subject.
(Editor's Note: Gen. Marshall's attitude on Palestine and the repatriation of displaced
persons is evaluated in Boris Smolar's column on Page 2.)

TYPICAL OF ANTI-SEMITIC terror in Poland is this
scene in Kladzko, where Jewish children require an armed
guard as they leave school. The Joint Distribution Com-
mittee, which is seeking $122,000,000 in 1947 for world-wide
relief, has undertaken a vast relief program for Jews re-
maining in Poland and those seeking haven elsewhere.
wounding of scores of police-
men, restored the threat that
martial law would be imposed
upon the country, Jewish
leaders resumed pressure
upon dissident groups to
cease terrorism.
Despite the Haifa attack, Jew-
ish leaders have not lost hope of
achieving a truce at least with
the Irgunists. Public opinion is
growing harsher towards the ex-.
tremists and it is hoped the Vaad
Leumi and public debate will be
helpful in isolating extremism.
Hope is expressed the govern-
ment will be helpful by refrain-
ing from imposing repressive
measures. =

DPs' Slaughter
Seen if Troops
Are Removed
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
lives of the thousands of dis-
placed Jews in Austria "would
not be worth 10 cents" once
the occupation troops with-
draw, Ira A. Hirschmann said
upon his return from Europe
where he toured DP installa-
tions as a special inspector-
general for UNRRA.
Hirschmann said that in light
of the fact the removal of oc-
cupation troops is fairly immi-
nent since a peace treaty for
Austria is to be negotiated
shortly, it is imperative that
Jewish DPs be transferred to
prevent their "slaughter."
In Germany, Hirschmann
found the morale in the* Jewish
DP camps had deteriorated
since he visited them last July,
as a result of the inability of
the refugees to emigrate to
Palestine or any other country.
He urged the U. S. take the
lead in admitting 50.000 DPs.
Rabbis classified as DPs in
Europe, who because of the
war were prevented from the
pursuit of their ministry, will
be considered for non-quota
immigration to the U. S., it was
disclosed in a State Depart-
ment ruling received by Abra-
ham Herman, HIAS president.
More than 500 Jewish refu-
gees from Shanghai are en-
route to new homes in Canada,
Latin America and the U. S..
according to the JDC, which
aided them to emigrate.
WARSAW, (JTA) — The
Polish government has or-
dered the removal from the
Catholic church in Leczyca,
near Lodz, of a ritual murder
painting which has been dis-
played there for many years,
serving as a stimulus for anti-
Jewish propaganda, it was re-
vealed at a press conference in.
the Ministry for Foreign Af-
fairs. The picture, which shows
Jews murdering a child for
ritual purposes, was shown to
the correspondents.
M. Sluczanski, an official of the
Ministry for Foreign Affairs, said
the picture was removed over the
opposition of the church. He em-
phasized a part of the Catholic
clergy in Poland is still engaged
in spreading anti-Jewish propa-
ganda and said the government is
taking all possible measures to
combat it.
A trial of two Polish women
charged with spreading rumors
that Jews kidnaped a 12-year-
old boy "for ritual purposes . ' was
held near Warsaw. The court es-
tablished that Gadomska's son
was kidnaped by two non-Jews
shortly before the Kielce pogrom
last July. in an attempt to pro-
voke anti-Jewish disturbances.
Both women admitted they spread
the rumor. but were acquitted
by court ruling they had not in-
tended to incite the population.
The Polish government appre-
ciates the struggle the Jews of
Palestine are engaged in, and is
in sympathy with Jewish national
aspirations, President Boleslaw
Beirut told Meir Yaari. Palestine
leader of the Hashomer Hatzair.
