Wise Quits ZOA Offices;
Calls Congress 'Tragic'

Founder of Zionist Organization in U. S. Charges World
Congress Proved Failure; ZOA Calls Him
'Most Tragic Figure' at Basle Conference

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Rabbi
Stephen S. Wise has announced
his resignation from "all offices
in the Zionist Organization of
America" as an aftermath to
what he charged was the ZOA's
misuse of its power at the World
Zionist Congress. Dr. Wise was
the founder of the ZOA in 1808
and has held various high offices
in the organization since then.
Stating that the Congress was
"nothing less than tragic in its
inadequacy in relation to a great
hour," Dr. Wise said it was "a
terrible defeat for the cause,
nothing less than disaster. The
heads of the Laborites and the
Zionist Organization of America
have succeeded in ousting Zion-
ism's greatest statesmen," he said.

ist Organization of America issu-

ed a statement commenting upon
Rabbi Stephen S. Wise's resigna-
tion from office in the ZOA, call-
ing him a "tragic figure at the
conference".
Asserting in his press interview
announcing his "regrettable re-
signation," Dr. Wise made state-
ments which "cannot and must
not" go "unchallenged or un-
answered," the Council's state-
ment said: "Dr. Wise legitimately
could have been expected to ex-
press dissatisfaction and disagree-
ment with the deliberations and
conclusions of the World Zionist
CongreSs after his return from
Basle."
