O NE of world Jewry's most distinguished scholars and leaders, Dr. Shlomo Kaplansky, will be the guest of the Detroit Chapter of the American Society for the Advancement of the Haifa (Palestine) Institute of Technology—popularly referred to as Technion—at the dinner on Monday evenng, Jan. 6, in the Embassy Room at Huyler's in the Fisher Bldg. The occasion will be used as a memorial tribute to the late Brig. Gen. Frederick H. Risch, one of the great war heroes who died in action in Tunisia, April 7, 1943. Dr. Kaplansky, president of the Haifa Technion, is on his third visit to the United States in 32 years. - National Director Views Progress in Haifa PrOject Judah Wattenberg, executive director of the American Society for the Advancement of the Hebrew Institute of Technology in Haifa, who was in Detroit last week to assist in plans for the dinner in honor of Dr. Shlomo Kaplansky, stated that cables received from Palestine re- veal that progress is being made in the estab- lishment of the Kisch„Memorial Laboratories. Several chemical and electrical laboratories, named in honor of Brig. Frederick H. Kisch, late chief engineer of the British 8th Army, will be the first buildings to go up; $25,000 worth of equipment has already been bought in this country and shipped to Palestine. "Word from Palestine is that the 50 Ameri can GI's who are now studying at our Institute are making rapid progress and are adjusted to the opportunities offered them there." he s:iid. "We are proud of the great contributions being made by our Institute and we look forward to even greater achievements under the new plans for the Institute's expansion." This academic year the Technion's registration is the highest in its history-1,000 in all three schools, including 50 Arne' i•an veterans who are studying there under the pro- visions of the G.I. Kaplansky became head of the Institute in 1931 there were 17,000 Jews in Haifa out of a total population of 51,000; now the Jews are a majority in the city-70,000 out of 130,000. The Palestine government has never helped the Institute but some years ago gave it a grant of $50,000. While the Jewish Agency is not responsible for the school's maintenance, for the last 15 years it has been partly sup- ported by the Agency and by outside funds, the greater share of which comes from America. The history of the Institute's president is as varied as that of his school. He has been an engineer, economist, politi- cal leader, director of colonization and, for the past 15 years, head of the Technion. His first trip to this country, irn 1914, was a business trip in behalf of the Jewish National Fund, of which he was colonization secretary at the time. In 1921 Dr. Kaplansky came to the convention of tAe American Poale-Zion organization. To Be Greeted By Professor Neef Born in Russia, Dr. Kaplansky studied in Vienna, went to Palestine as early as 1912 and later to London as head of the Financial and Economic Committee of the Zionist executive, of which he was a member from 1924 to 1931. His wife was born in Berlin, his son in London and his daughter in Jerusalem. Louis Gelfand, president of the Detroit chapter of the Technion, announces that Dr. Arthur Neef, Provost of Wayne Uni- versity and Dean of the university's law school, will welcome Dr. Kaplansky at the dinner in the name of Wayne University and its faculty. The committee in charge of the dinner aspires to duplicate his sum through gifts for the $100-per-couple dinner on Jan. 6. Mr. Brody stated in an- nouncing the gift that he has always been interested in sponsoring projects which will give opportuni- ties for technical training to Jewish youths. "The opportunities that were denied to many of us should be given to those in our time who are building a better life — in Palestine especially, and I am glad to be able to do my bit for the great Haifa Technical In- stitute," he said.
