Orthodox Rabbis
Decry Misuse of
Brith Miloh Rite

Asserting that they had
"learned with great apprehension
that irregularities and irreverent
objectionable practices and
abuses—many of tiollhm invalidat-
ing the holy rite of Brith Miloh
and leaving the Jewish boy in the
status of an uncircum-Azed son of
Israel—have entered in the per-
formance of the sacred covenant
of Abraham," Detroit's orthodox
rabbis have issued a call to the
Jews of Detroit emphasizing-
1. That parents must engage a
religious qualified Mohel to
perform the Brith Miloh,
and not a physician or surr
geon as the Brith is more
than mere surgery. It is the
first most sacred act in the
Jewish child's initiation into
the immortal faith of Israel.
It therefore must be per-
formed with devout religious
feeling and the recital of
deeply stirring religious
prayers and symbols.
2- Under no circumstances
must parents allow or be
persuaded to allow to per-
form the Brith against the
explicit Biblical command-
ment, before the eighth day-
A Brith before the eighth
day does absolutely invali-
date the hely act.
