Truman Rushes Four Ships
To Bring Refugees to U. S.
WASHINGTON—American ships are speed-
ing across the Atlantic bound for Bremer-
haven, at the direction of President Truman,
to begin the first large-scale movement of
Displaced Persons to the U. S.
- Four vessels have been assigned to pick up
the refugees at the over-crowded Port of
Bremerhaven. The first of the fleet is sched-
uled to take on passengers on New Year's
Day.
A total of 2,100 persons at Bremerhaven
have U. S. visas, but their departure had been
delayed several months by lack of shipping.
The vessels accommodate approximately
900 passengers each and will be kept in this
service, the President said, "until the situa-
tion has been fully relieved."
Pointing to the "serious situation" among
the DPs, who include 177 orphaned children,
and who "are crowded into an embarkation
coter designed to accommodate only transi-
ents," the President said "I have taken up
this matter with the Maritime Commission
and can hold out hope of early improvement."
Mr. Truman referred to his directive of

gates ruled, by a vote of 171 to 154--25 abstaining—

and to decide to take part in the conference.
The ships designated for the Bremerhaven
run are the Ernie Pyle, which sailed from
New York on Dec. 20 and due to arrive there
New Year's Way: the Marine Marlin, which
will reach Bremerhaven Jan. 6, and the
Marine Flasher, arriving in Bremerhaven
Jan. 8. The Marine Falcon will arrive in
Bremerhaven in late January.
Jeuriok Refugee); Arrive in N. Y.
NEW YORK—The largest group of refugees to
enter the U. S. under President Truman's direc-
tive-928 men, women and children—landed here
Dec. 20 aboard the S.S. Marine Marlin. Of these,
313 Jewish survivors were sponsored by the JDC
and entered under affidavits provided by the
United Service for New Americans.
The election of Dr. Chaim Weizmann was
precluded as a result of final decisions at the
Congress.
The Zionist Congress w(.....nt on record endors-
ing the accepted right of Jews to resist efforts aimed
at preventing progress in the ppbuilding of the Jew-
ish Homeland, but condemned the extremist terror-
ist groups and repudiated their activities.
Resolutions unanimously adopted called for
unrestricted Jewish immigration and the right to
land purchases and condemned the white paper.
