Dr. Benjamin Schwadron, di-
rector of research of the Ameri-
can Zionist Emergency Council
and editor of Palestine Affairs,
will adress the special pre-
campaign rally for organizational
delegates and workers of the
Detroit Histadrut (Gewerkshaf-
ten) campaign at 8:30 p.m. next
Thursday, Dec. 26, at the Rose
Sittig Cohen Bldg., 13226 Lawton.
Dr. Schwadron recently re-
turned from an extended visit to
Palestine and the Middle East.
Worn in Jerusalem, he has been
Palestine and Middle East editor
of the Hebrew paper, Hadoar, and
a contributor to magazines and
periodicals on international prob-
lems.

National Conference

Members of the board of direc-
tors of the Women's Division of
the Jewish Welfare Federation
heard a report on the recent
United Jewish Appeal conference,
held in Atlantic City. from Isi-
dore Sobeloff, executive director
of the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion. at their meeting, Dec. 11. at
the Jewish Community Center.
Mr. Sobeloff emphasized the
enormity of relief needs and said
that all delegates to the UJA con-
ference had expressed willingness
to do whatever was needed to
solve the problem.

participation in the 1947 Allied
Jewish Campaign, Mrs. John C.
Hopp. co-chairman of the com-
mittee on campaign structure.

WARSAW, (JTA)—Fifty horses
given to Poland by UNRRA have
been assigned to Jewish farmers
in Silesia and Pomerania.

Altman's Jewish Radio Hour
this week-end will start its 18th
year of uninterrupted service to
the community over Station
WJLB,
For more than 15 years, the
programs were conducted by Mr.
and Mrs. Hyman Altman. Upon
the death of Mr. Altman a year
and a half ago, Mrs. Altman con-
tinued the broadcasts.
The programs are presented
over WJLB on Saturday nights,
8:30 to 10 o'clock, and Sundays,
11:45 a. m. to 1 p. in.
Mrs. Altman places emphasis
on charitable activities, and all
local organizations have received
strong support from her.
The Altman Jewish Hours have
been helpful during Allied Jew-
ish campaigns, Community Chest
drives, Education Months of the
United Hebrew Schools . and in
behalf of other important causes.

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—British
soldiers and sailors clubbed and
tear gassed 750 visorless refugees
who refused to disembark at
Cyprus. The Jews, who last
week were rescued from the tiny,
Dodecanese island of Sirini where
they had been shipwrecked, re-
fused to go to internment camps,
maintaining they had been
promised they would go to Pal-
esti ne.
A committee of Jews from the
Caraolos interment camp and a
representative of the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee, at the be-
hest of the British authorities,
tried to convince the visaless im-
migrants to land but failed. Dur-
ing the clash a party cf sailors
from a British warship anchored
in Famagusta harbor was sent to
re i n f o r c e the club-swinging
troops.
Meanwhile, in Jerusalem the
Palestine government announced
that Colonial Secretary Arthur
Creech-Jones had agreed to per-
mit the women and children
among the rescued Jews to enter
Palestine to await future certi-
ficates.

Members of Kvutzah Ivrith,
Hebrew cultural group of De-
troit, and their friends will cele-
brate Hanukah this Saturday
evening, Dec. 21, the fifth night
of Hanukah. in the auditorium of
the Rose Sittig Cohen Bldg.
One of the features will be a
talk by Sholem Levitt. a native
of Palestine and at present a
member of the staff of the United
Hebrew Schools. He will talk
on "Palestinian Youth. -
Community singing will be con-
ducted by Abraham Schechter.
Refreshments will be served
by the Kvutzah Ladies Auxiliary,
of which Mrs. Julius Ring is
president.
M. Michlin is chairman of the
Hanukah program.
Joseph Haggai and Norman
Ruttenberg head the cultural
committee. Joseph Katz is presi-
dent of Kvutzah.

The time honored custom of
celebrating the completion of the
study of an important book and
marking the start of the study
of a next book, known as a siyum,
always has been observed in the
United Hebrew Schools.
Such celebrations will be held
for the Parkside graduating class
on Sunday, Jan. 12, in the audi-
