NEW YORK (JTA)—Leading Jewish organizations are lauding
the adoption by the Council of Foreign Ministers of the clauses in
the peace treaties with Hungary and Rumania insuring the restora-
tion of civil rights and the restitution of property to Jews in the
two ex-satellite countries.
Specifically, the Council of Foi;eign Ministers agreed that
Rumania and Hungary must undertake not to discriminate against
Jews or other persons for racial or religious reasons and must turn
over heirless Jewish property to local Jewish relief organizations,
if that property was confiscated by the governments of the coun-
tries during the war under the then existing anti-Jewish laws.
JERUSALEM, (JTA)—A ves-
sel carrying more than 800 Jew-
ish refugees bound for Palestine
has sunk or been grounded near
the small island of Sirini about
50 miles from Rhodes in the Do-
decanese group. At least eight
passengers have been lost.
A Jewish Agency spokesman
said that the remainder of the
immigrants are safe on the is-
land, but need emergency sup-
plies of food, clothing and wa-
ter. Royal Air Force bombers
parachuted 7upplies to the
stranded refugees. The Agency
sent a rescue expedition of doc-
tors and nurses.
At least one Jew was reported
injured and several shop win-
dows smashed in a riot by Brit-
ish troops in Nathanya, Dec. 7.
Senator Wayne Morse (R) of
Oregon arrived here Dec. 8. He
said in his recent tour of DP
camps in Europe, he found that
the refugees desire to go to Pal-
estine, and, therefore, he wishes
to see "Jewish enterprise" here
at first hand. Jacob Javits, Re-
publican Congressman-elect from
New York, visited Tel Aviv,
where he was received by Mayor
Israel Rokach.
