THE JEWISH NEWS

Dr. Magnes Atthck ed by Hecht and
Gillette for Criticizing Revisionists

Charging that "A Flag Is
Born," Ben Hecht's current
Broadway offering, is terrorist
propaganda, Dr. Judas L. Magnes,
president of the Hebrew Univer-
. sity, has addressed an open
letter to Mrs. Franklin D.
Roosevelt, protesting both the
play- and Mrs.. Rooseyelt's spon-
sorship of it, a report in the New
York Times reveals.
The play, which has been on
Broadway since Dec. 5, is pro-
duced by the American League
for a Free Palestine. Dr. Magnes'
letter attacks it as "an appeal to
terror," and labels leaflets dis-
tributed to the audience "propa-
ganda" and "deceptions -.
He accuses those responsible
for the play of wanting not a
democratic Palestine, as they
staunchly maintain, but rather a
"Jewish state, dominated by
Jews."
"A democratic state—such as
they talk about," the letter reads,
"would at this time really mean
Arab domination in Palestine, be-
cause the Arabs are in a great
majority and in a democratic
state the majority rules. The
Jews and the Arabs can be equal
partners in a bi-national state.
Dr. Magnes contradicts the
company's manager, who, after
each performance, solicits funds
for the purchase of ships to carry
refugees to Palestine. "The fact
is,- he writes, "that the League

has participated in the purchase
of refugee ships in an almost
negligible way."
In conclusion. Dr. Magnes asks
Mrs. Roosevelt to withdraw her
name from the list of sponsors of
the play.
Meanwhile, Senator Guy M.
Gillette, president of the league,
issued an unequivocal denial' to
Dr. Magnes' charges, retorting
that they were "extravagant, dis-
torted and false," and "must have
behind them some motive of pol-
itical chicanery . . . All money
from 'A Flag Is Born' goes to
the Repatriation Fund headed by
Ben Hecht, Will Rogers, Jr., and
Louis Bromfield. Every dollar is
sent to Europe where it is applied
to evacuating displaced persons
from pogrom areas to Palestine."
Ben Hecht, author of the play,
also issued a refuting statement,
adding a few charges of his own.
"Dr. Magnes has the psychology
of ostrich Jews whose greatest
fear is that they may irritate their
enemies and who regard doing
anything less than dying as a
faux pas," he declared.
"It is unbecoming to Dr. Mag-
nes to break the silence which he
maintained while 6,000,000 He-
brews were slaughtered, and
raise his voice today to defame
the few survivors who are making
history in the same way as the
Maquis, the Partisans, the Irish
rebels, and the American revolu-
tionists," Hecht added.
