Congregational Activities
Council Stimulates Community's
Jewish Book Month Observance
Dr. Cole Occupies
Pulpit at Beth El
On Friday evening, Dec. 6, the
pulpit of Temple Beth El will be
occupied by Dr. Walton E. Cole,
minister of the First Congrega-
tional Church.
Dr. B. Benedict Glazer will be
in Glenco, Ill., where he will ad-
dress the North Shore Congrega-
tion Israel, and in Chicago, where
he will speak at a combined
service of all the South Side Re-
formed Congregations. Dr. Glazer
is one of the 40 leading rabbis in
the country who have been com-
mandeered by the union of
American Hebrew Congregations
to visit communities throughout
the country on a preaching re-
vival mission — the American
Jewish Cavalcade.

of Jewish Book Month, being observed nationally from Nov. 15 to

Month from Nov. 15 to Dec. 15,

ty groups have arranged displays.

Local obervance of Jewish
Book Month was simulated large-
ly through the organization of a
Detroit Book Council, with
Moiahe Haar as chairman. The
Council was founded by rep-
resentatives of the Parkman an i
Utley branches of the Detroit
Puhlic Library, Shaarey Zk..dek,
T , •ziple Beth El. American Jewish
Congress, Sholem Aleichem Folk
Institute. and the Jewish Com-
munity Center.
Book displays like that pictur-

been arranged in other syn-
ag•egue. and temples and at the
Th ic -Shaarey Zedek' ex-
tuba. arranged in cooperation
with the Kvutzah Ivrith, features
hooks on Palestine, and recent
newsnapeis and periodicals pub-
lished in the Yishuv.
All adult interest groups at the
Center are devoting one meet-
ing during the month to book
reviews and discussions. Other
toed. adult and young people's
cultural, Zionist, and fraternal
groups have also held, or are
planning similar meetings, as re-
ported in this month's issues of
the Jewish News.
Detroit member groups of the
National Federation of Temple
Brotherhoods are participating in
the larger organization's contribu-
tion to Jewish Book Month by
sp,insoi ing the - Fifteen Minute
Jew Treasure Reading Plan."
By following the Federation-
pu•lished schedule, members of

the community may rapidly en-
large their acquaintance with one
of four selected fields, Bible, Jew-
ish Personalities, American Jew-
ish History, or Jewish Literature.
The Jewish Chautauqua So-
ciety, sponsored by the Federa-
tion, is participating in the Book
Month observance by providing
material for displays of Jewish
literature at 300 colleges through-
out the country.

"Thieves in the Night," by
Arthur Koestler, the novel on the
violent underground resistance to
British policy in Palestine, will
be the theme of a book review
sermon by Rabbi Leon Fram at
8:30 p. m. this Friday in the Lec-
ture Hall of the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
Rabbi Fram has visited Pales-
tine twice and has lived in the
scenes of Koestler's novel.
Because of his congregational
and communal committments dur-
ing December, Rabbi Fram an-
nounces that he is unable to at-
tend the World Zionist Congress.
An alternate delegate will be
sent by the Zionist Organization
of America.
Friday night, Dec. 13, Rabbi
Fram will lecture on the subject
"Nationalism—Is It An Obstacle
to World Peace?"

Plans for the writing of a Sefer
Torah, in fulfillment of a project
contemplated before his death by
Rabbi Meir Shapiro, founder of
Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin, are
being formulated by a committee
of members and friends of the
Yeshivah.

All Detroit Jews may partici-
pate in the creation of the Torah
