Mrs. Roosevelt pointed out if the Egyptian amendment were
adopted. it would have the effect of making the resettlement of
Jewish refugees impossible and would make their repatriation to
their native lands obligatory.
Mrs. Roosevelt also opposed a Soviet motion to eliminate a para-
graph defining DPs as those "unable or unwilling" to avail them-
selves of the protection of their countries of origin, pointing out its
deletion might affect Polish Jews who do not want to return to
Poland.

The Committee also took steps to redraft a-- proposal that might
have been interpreted as permitting Arab states to prevent the IRO
from assisting in the resettlement of Jewish refugees in Palestine.
The proposal, offered in the form of an amendment to the IRO con-
stitution, by Yugoslav delegate, Leon Mattes, would force the IRO
"to refrain from any temporary or permanent location of refugees
and displaced persons in a territory if any of the neighboring coun-
tries submit a formal objection based on the endeavor to preserve
friendly relations between nations."

To Map Campaign for 1947

On Sunday evening, Dec. 1, a committee composed of com-
munity leaders will sponsor a testimonial banquet at the Fort
Wayne Hotel, in honor of Mr. Nathan R. Epstein, president
of the Detroit Auxiliary of Los Angeles Sanatorium.

While we are honoring a man at this time in recognition
of his great contributions to an important cause—the Sana-
torium and Ex-Patients Home at Duarte, near Los Angeles,
where scores of Detroiters who suffered from tuberculosis
have been treated and cured—the intention of the commit-
tee is to encourage the drive in Detroit for the Medical Cen-
ter to be erected at the sanatorium at a cost of $2,100.000.

Detroit's quota is $100,000. It is a small sum, considering
that the objective of the drive is to help erect a great medi-
cal center where Jewish internes will be able to pursue their
medical training, where Jewish doctors will have facilities
for research.

NATHAN R. EPSTEIN

Eventually. it is the hope of the leaders in the movement
to erect a great medical college, as part of the scheme of
advancing medical research and of making it possible for
Jewish students to enter medical schools without prejudice.

The proposed medical center will be a national institution
in which American Jews will be able to take pride because
of its non-sectarian principles.

The center, when completed, will equal in technical excel-
lence institutions of the highest standards and will be pre-
pared to render the finest social service through dedication
to care of those who are unable to pay for medical services.

In order that Detroit Jews should have their full share in
this great undertaking, we appeal to all Detroit Jews to join
with us in the event on Sunday evening, honoring an in-
defatigable worker—Mr. Nathan R. Epstein—and to partici-
pate in the work of the Los Angeles Sanatorium and the
plans for the medical center. -

As chairman of the t e stimonial banquet on Sunday eve-
ning, I appeal to the Jews of Detroit to attend the dinner
and to join us in our work.

Sincerely yours.
