MUNICH, (JTA)—Immigration from the U. S. zone of Germany
to America dropped to a new low in October when only 42 persons
embarked for America.
The number of applicants for visas to the U. S. also has dropped
because the refugees apparently are discouraged by the tremendous
backlog of visa requests.
The drop was attributed to the large number of Americans who
were repatriated in October and to the U. S. shipping strike.
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Reports abroad concerning open clashes
between the Haganah and the Jewish extremist groups were denied
by responsible Jewish circles here. However, they admitted the
Haganah was attempting to prevent violence wherever possible,
even when that leads to a conflict with the extremists.
The same circles disclosed a member of the Haganah was killed
while attempting to remove a land mine planted by the extremists.
He was caught in a cross fire between British troops and members
of the Irgun Zvai Leumi. They also revealed that members of the
Haganah disarmed and imprisoned overnight a squad of extremists
who attempted to mine a road near Givat Brenner.
Jerusalem wits have dubbed the fortified government citadel
in the center of the city, in which Police headquarters and military
and civilian offices are located, "Bevingrad."
The Irgun Zvai Leumi radio "Voice of Fighting Zion" described
as "lies" the reports by the British Intelligence Service that Jewish
extremists had threatened to assassinate high-ranking statesmen
and military figures. The broadcast welcomed the recent announce-
ment by the Haganah that it had not launched an attack on the
Irgun and the Sternists, and appealed to the Haganah to join them
in a• holy war" against the British oppressors.
Asserting that terrorist attacks in Palestine will lead to the
destruction of the Jewish community and its achievements in the
country, Dr. Judah L. Magnes, president of the Hebrew University
in Jerusalem and leader of the Ichud Party. appealed for an end
to extremist activities. He spoke at ceremonies marking the opening
of the University's 22nd academic year.
"Judaism must oppose the vain doctrine of achieving Zionist
thus endanger all
aims by terror—this pagan Torah—because we
that has been built with so much love and sacrifice," he said.
Deputies Warn "Terror Scare" Reports Foster Anti-Jewish Feelings
LONDON (JTA)—The Board of Deputies of British Jews issued
the activities of
a statement expressing "distress" at the reports
the Palestine extremists are to be extended to England. At the
same time, the statement regretted the "sensationalism of these
reports," emphasizing they can foster anti-Jewish feelings.
"The Anglo-Jewish community," the statement says, "strongly
condemns the policy of terror and intimidttion. But it regrets the
sensationalism of the reports which can only tend to create bad
feelings against the Jews."
When the liner Ascania arrived in Liverpool from the Middle
East with 1,000 Jewish passengers, a heavy police guard was thrown
around the dock area, and only those persons who had official
business on the pier were allowed through. Press photographers
were compelled to open their cases and reporters were turned
away unless they had special permits issued by the Ministry of
Transport. Military and civil police, meanwhile, screened all of
the passengers.
Twenty-nine Palestinan Jews who were among the passengers
who arrived in Liverpool from the Middle East aboard the Ascania,
were stripped of their clothing. kept waiting for hours, and had
their luggage fine-combed by Scotland Yard detectives hunting
alleged terrorists seeking to enter the country to assassinate promin-
ent government officials. Nothing suspicious was discovered.

region have encountered no anti-Semitism, the report said.

To Support Partition
Proposed by Agency
YORK (JPS-Palcor)—
Former Undersecretary of State
Welles, writing in the New York
Herald Tribune, urges vigorous
U. S. support for a partition of
Palestine under the "viable state
plan" proposed by the Jewish
Agency, to be under the tempor-
ary control of the UN Trustee-
NEW
ship Council.
"It is well known in official
quarters that several Arab lead-
ers are willing to accept this sol-
ution," Mr. Welles writes, "but
it is clear that none of the Arabs
will officially support this pro-
posal until they are informed that
the British government itself in-
sists upon such a solution and
until they are told by London
that they are not going to receive
more favorable terms.
The present threat to adoption
of a solution which, while by no
means meeting all of the aspira-
tions of the Jews nor all the de-
sires of the Arabs, would at least
be fair and practicable, lies in the
possibility the British govern-
ment may persist in its policy of
