Purim Joke Becomes a Reality
I■
Before his hanging, forgetting his defense at-the - ftiern-
berg trial at which he claimed that he really was a. friend
of the Jews, Julius Streicher, No. 1 Nazi Jew-baiter, looked
doWn from the scaffold and shouted:
"Purim feast, 1946."
Thus, a joke that went the rounds at the height Of Nazi
power, now is a reality.
Under Hitler, one of the standing jokes was that the
fuchrer himself went to a fortune teller who prophecied
that he would die on a Jewish holiday. When he insisted
upon knowing what holiday it will be, the fortune teller
replied: "Whenever you die, the day will be a Jewish holi-
day."
And a Jewish version of the story was that a, victim of
the Storm Troopers, in spite of the torture to which he was
subjected, smacked his lips. Asked for an . explanation, he
said: "I have a vision of the splendid new dish we will have
when Hitler is gone. We have kneidlach as a Passover re-
membrance of our victory over Pharaoh. We have Haman-
taschen to commemorate our triumph over Haman on Purim.
Think of the delightful food we'll have on the holiday com-
memorating the triumph over Hitler!"
Streicher apparently knew Jewish history. He knew that
we have more than one Purim—that there is many a Purim
Katan—a miniature Purim—commemorating escape by Jews
'from evil decrees intended against them. When the festival
celebrating the victory over Nazism finally is established it
will be a Purim Gadal—a very great holiday for all mankind.
Year-Round Community Structure
Organization by the Detroit Service Group of the year-
round functioning community trades and professional groups
should be welcomed as an undertaking of great significance
,to the Jewish people of our community.
The Service Group's projects indicate a recognition that
fund-raising alone is not sufficient, that a community is not
progressive when it devotes several weeks in the year to
gathering means for relief and education and forgets its
responsibilities the rest of the time. If we are to have a
and active
strong constituency, we must have thinking
various
groups constantly functioning in behalf of our
agencies.
Year-round organiiations will provide opportunities for
planning, for discussions of issues affecting Jewry, for lead-
ership training. Those taking an active part in the various
divisions fovned by the Service Group should provide the
manpower for the educational, recreational and social ser-
vice agencies which make up our great community.
The Service Group's program is a step in the right direc-
tion, resulting from progressive action and thinking and

Give to Community Chest•
In this year of transition from the former
War Chest drives to the present Community
Chest campaign, it is important that the
entire community should realize the signifi-
cance of the appeal that is being made to all
citizens—Catholics, Jews and Protestants—
to assist in raising the entire DetrQit goal of
$5,800,000 for 125 local agencies and the USO.
Unlike the drives that were conducted
pointing to the great result for the good of our people and during the war, the current campaign ex-
cludes from its quota the previous appropri-
