Netzorg Dies After Flight SOS Co-Chairman By RABBI MORRIS ADLER The news that Morton I. Net- zorg suffered •a fatal stroke al- most at the very instant of his return to this country, has shock- ed and saddened not only his family and his boyhood friends in Detroit, but literally thousands of former Jewish GI's. A native of Detroit, Mr. Netzorg lived for thirty-five years in the Philippines. He knew intimately the conditions of the inhabitants of those distant islands and was known and respected in their educational and cultural circles. He was recognized as a leading figure in the Jewish community of Manila, and served through the years as a rallying center for its org;inization a n d development. Ed national Background I I is fine educational background, }iii intelle ctual interests and his anti friendly personality, it.d w-elding together succeeded in diverse elements of the city, the Wifei mg so greatly in back- ground and temperament. A son was lost (•:11ile Although both had suffiled immeasurably and had been grei.tly weakened - by the ordeal v, Inch they had endured. they carried on unfalteringly. Immediately upon the entry into Manila of the American Army. the Netzorgs became the Jewish community. I remember vividly that period which now seems to bc a period of an earlier existence of mine. Those were confused and difficult days. There were civilian. Jews to be fed, clothed, sheltered, hospita lized. In the midst of a city that was shattered and all but destroyed, the simple were unobtainable. Military's Problems One was lost and did not know where to turn. The military were completely preoccupied with their own problems for we were still at war. Thousands of Ameri- can soldiers were pouring into the city. Morton Netzorg plan- ned, directed, organized. All the Problems of Jews in the vicinity came to him. In his home I ad- dressed the first meeting of the Jews of Manila, assembled to re- constitute their community. The home of the Netzorgs on Perez street became a USO-JWB club, and rare indeed was the Jewish necessities From Philippines Stricken at Bedside of Wife; Former Detroiter Prisoner of Japs During War Morton I. MIRIANI GIs Will Mourn Him Only two weeks ago I received a note from him written with I characteristic exuberance and in finely turned phrase, advising me of his coming visit to the United States. Netzorg came but death accompanied him, for he did not live to enjoy his reunion with his native land and with hii7 friends. Throughout the United States Jewish GI's learning the news will mourn with the family the loss of a dear friend who was a source of encouragement and inspiration during anxious days. The, name of Morton Netzorg will remain a blessing in the memory of a vast group of American Jewish soldiers. • Mrs. Helen Singer, city-wide chairman of the SOS Emergency Collection Drive, has appointed Mandell Delman to serve as her co-chairman in charge of the trade groups and organizations division. .
