Congress Investigating 'American Action Drive NEW YORK (JPS)—The Senate and House Campaign investi- gating committees have begun a probe of "American Action Inc.," new right-wing political group formed from the remnants of the pre-war America First Committee and the defunct Liberty League. The new group, believed to have raised a fund of from $750,000 to $1.000.000 to defeat 187 liberal candidates for Congress whom it terms "subversive," was organized almost a year ago and now campaigns in a dozen states. James Reston, New York Times correspondent and head of its Washington staff, in an article on American Action Inc.. listed some of the associates of the new group but failed to mention that Franco propagandist Merwin K. Hart, Queens Coughlinite leader. Robert M. Harriss and Upton Close, radio commentator and writer frequently quoted in the native fascist press, are among its sponsors. Mr. Reston describes American Action Inc. as a "loose, somewhat vague organization" which "does not seem at this time to be very influential." He quotes the organization's head. Edward A. Hayes of Chicago. to the effect that it has collected only $50,000 so far and will be formed to reduce its activities. Later, in the same story, Mr. Reston quotes Gen. Robert E. Wood; former head of the America First Committee, a "contributor" to the new organ- i7ation. who estimated its finances at about $110,000. According to General Wood, American Action Inc. has nothing whatever to do with the foreign policy of the United Slates. with which the original America First Committee was primarily concerne,d, but Was organ- ized to counter the political tactics of the CIO Political Actions Committee.
