Deported With Wife

Rabbi Neuhaus was the last
rabbi of the famous Frankfort
Jewish community before its de-
struction by the Nazis. He was
deported with his wife to The-
resienstadt, and miraculously sur-
vived. They were among 400
Frankfort Jews who were left
from a total population of 30,000
in 1938.
After their liberation, Dr. and
Mrs. Neuhaus returned to Frank-
fort, where they organized the
few returned Jews into the
Frankfort Jewish Gemeinde.
As the only surviving rabbi
who returned to Germany after
the end of hostilities, Dr. Neu-
haus was responsible for the or-
ganization of Jewish life in the
cities and villages of the Ameri-
can controlled zone. As Chief
Rabbi of Greater Hessen he was
also spokesman for the Jewish
people in all internal m - itters.
