Northwest Men's Club
Installs New Officers;
Plan Year's Program

The first fall meeting of the
Men's Club of the Northwest He-
brew Congregation and Center
got off to an auspicious start on
Sept. 23 in the social hall of the

Miss Alice Frieder of Cincin-
nati, a graduate of Vassar College,
will be the guest of Dr. and Mrs.
Samuel B. Danto, 2224 Chicago,

recently dedicated synagogue at
Curtis and Santa Rosa.
After a review of the past
work of the organization by the
outgoing President Manny Lax,
the new officers were installed
by Ira Kaufman, president of the
synagogue. The following are
the new officers:
Samuel M. Bez, president;
Malcom L. Rivkin, vice-presi-
dent; Alfred Brook, vice-presi-
dent; David B. Aaron, treasurer;
Arthur Schultz, financial sec'y.;
Max N. Haidy, sergeant-at-arms;
Manny Lax, member ex-officio;
William Shulman, secretary.
A beautiful bronze cup was
presented to the team which won
the softball championship.

Highlight of the meeting was
the greeting by the synagogue's
new rabbi, Jacob E. Segal.
- The Men's Club is planning ed-
ucational and social affairs, be-
sides regular programs of child
and adult education.
Meeting once a month the club
now has more than 300 members.

Temple Israel Men's Club
To Welcome Veterans at
Dinner Meeting Oct. 23

Temple Israel Men's Club will
hold a welcome home dinner hon-
oring returned veterans of Temple
Isarel, at Hotel Statler, on Wed-
nesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p. m. The
speaker will be Commander Jo-
shua Goldberg, liaison officer of
the U. S. Navy.
Members of "emple Israel are
asked to notify the office of all
returned servicemen and service-
women so that invitations can be
mailed to them. Maurice Levine,
chairman of the affair, urges all
male members of Temple Israel to
make reservations for this din-
ner immediately at the Temple
office or from the following
members of :ie committee: Irving
Levy, Harry Pliskow, Harold
Schakne, Joe Siegel and Sol
Stein.

Rabbis Adler, Hershman
To Deliver Sermons at
Shaarey Zedek Services

Rabbi Morris Adler will de-
liver the sermon at Cong. Shaarey

during her visit Oct. 10 to 18.
Miss Frieder, a delegate to the
First International Conference of
Christians and Jews held at Ox-
ford University in England last
summer, will speak before a num-
ber of youth groups during her
visit to Detroit. She will take up
her duties this fall as program
director of the Cincinnati Round
Table of Christians and Jews.
Her father is Alex Frieder,
president of the Rockdale Avenue
Temple in Cincinnati, and her
uncle, Adolph Rosenberg, is presi-
dent of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregat ions.

Rabbi Segal to Deliver
Sukkoth Sermons at
Northwest Congregation

Rabbi Jacob E. Segal will de-
liver the sermons at Northwest
Hebrew Congregation on Suk-
koth, Thursday and Friday morn-
ings, on the topics "The goof the
Stars Shine Through" and "The
Symbols by Which a People
Lives." On Sabbath morning, Oct,
12, Rabbi Segal will speak on the
subject "Who Shall Be Our Suk-
kah Guests?"
Shemini Atzeres services will
be held Wednesday evening, Oct.
16, and Thursday morning, Oct.
17. In conjunction with the Yizkor
services that morning, Rabbi Se-
gal will preach on "Wrong and
Right Kinds of Memorials." On
Thursday, Oct. 17, at 6 p. m. Sim-
hat Torah will be celebrated.
Children of the congregation's re-
ligious school will participate.
Saturday morning, Oct. 19,
Rabbi Segal will ...eak on "The
First Citizen of the World."
Daily services are held at the
Synagogue at 8 a. m. and 6 p. m.

Plans Young Men's Group

Plans for the formation of a
young men's group at Beth Aaron
congregation were made at a
meeting last Monday at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. SaM Schneider

Parents and children of Temple
Israel will participate in several
projects featuring the celebration
of Sukkoth.
The pupils of Temple Israel
religious school will build minia-
ture models of the ancient Suk-
kah. They will be brought to the
religious school on Saturday and
Sunday, Oct. 12 and 13.
The most beautiful Sukkah
creations will be taken to the
Detroit Institute of Arts to adorn
the lecture hall for the service of
the Blessing of the Children
which will take place - at the Feast
of Conclusion on Thursday morn-
ing, Oct. 17.
Rabbi Leon Fram will confer
the traditional priestly blessing
upon the boys and girls of the
ages of 4 and 5 who have just
begun their religious education
in the school of Temple Israel.
On Thursday, Temple Israel
will hold its Sukkoth service in
the lecture hall of the Art Insti-
tute at 10:30. Rabbi Fram will
preach on the subject "Harvest
Time." On Friday night, Oct. 11,
services will be held at 8:30 and
Rabbi Fram will preach on "The
Towering Figure of Moses." Har-
vey Saperstein, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Meyer Saperstein, will cele-
brate his Bar Mitzvah. The con-
gregation will be the guests of
his parents at the social hour.

Select Social Club

Sam Sage, Michigan director of
the PCA—CIO will address the
Select Social Group at the Jewish
Center this Saturday at 9 p. m. on
the subject of the candidates for
Congress and the U. S. Senate.

Los Angeles Group
Marvin Shore's orchestra and
his Serenaders will furnish the
music for the Sunday dance
sponsored by the Los Angeles
group, to be held Sunday evening
at the Jewish Center. The public
is invited. These dances are held
for middle-aged men and women
every other week.

DETROIT WOMEN'S SERV-
ICE CLUB met Sept. 23. New
members were welcomed by
Tillie Tam, membership chair-
man. Charity and Red Cross will
be the main activities for the
coming year.

Junior Service Group Plans Events
Based on Jewish Communal Life

Various phases of Jewish com-
munal life will form the theme
of Junior Service Group meet-
i..-.gs this fall, according to the
report issued by the JSG pro-
gram committee, through its
chairman, Dr. Sam Krohn.
At the Sept. 23 meeting Dr.
Krohn outlined the following cal-
endar of general meetings for
the coming months:
Sunday, Oct. 20, 2:30 p. m.,
Jewish Center—The "Role of the
Junior Service Group in Detroit's
Jewish Community" will be dis-
cussed. Sol J. Schwartz, presi-
dent, will outline the purposes of

the business meeting.
Sunday, Nov. 7—A discussion
of overseas relief problems, espe-
cially in Europe. Songs by the
Hadassah Chorus will be a high-
light.
Sunday, Dec. 8—Palestinian
night, with a talk by a recent
resident of Palestine.
Friday, Jan. 10—First of a pro-
posed annual series of religious
nights, with JSG members at-
tending Friday evening services
at Shaarey Zedek. The sermon
will be addressed to youth. An
open forum will %pow.
Sunday, Feb. 17 "Has the De-
troit Jewish Community taken
care of its own?" The debate on
this question will involve a
discusison of the work of the
agencies included in the Jewish
Welfare Federation.
JSG also will hold a Hanukah
barn dance, celebrating tradi-
tional Jewish holidays in ap-

propriate fashion.
