By" DR. NOAH E. ARONSTAM

(Inspired by Switserland's refusal to permit the
holding of the World Zionist Congress in Basle)
Hide they shame beneath a veil
Helvetia, Helvetia!
Refusest thou my people's quest

a decision motivated by reports that Great
Britain is determined to continue to "explore"
the much-explored Palestine situation.
From more recent reports, there is all
likelihood that–the- Jewish Agency will par-
tiCipate in discussions with the British gov-
ernment and that an avenue may be opened

for the solution of the tragic issues facing
the Jews of Palestine and the hundreds of
thousands who will seek entrance into Eretz
Israel.
Whatever the ultimate result, Jews every-
where owe it to the leaders of the Jewish
Agency to adhere to its decisions and to ac-
cept them as the results of mature judgment.
Meanwhile, Great Britain continues to
make the lot of the unfortunate European
'survivors more difficult by postponing action,
at a time when it is imperative that large
numbers of Jews should be settled speedily
in Zion.
Apparently Great Britain is determined to
appease the Arab League, her own creation,
without taking into consideration the ex-
pressed desires of the masses of the Arabs in
Palestine who are craving for peace and for
an opportunity to work harmoniously with
their Jewish neighbors for the advancement
of Palestine's economic and cultural life.
Therefore the guilt for prolonged troubles
ill Palestine reverts again upon the heads of
the British government who are trying to
"muddle through" a trying situation. By
muddling" at the expense of lives. Britain
is criminally involved in a very bad situation.

Much to Be Done

licretolore we have been misled into be-
lieving that nearly all of the Christians of
the world are sympathetically inclined to-
wards Jewish claims in Palestine. From time
to time, however, we begin to hear of oppo-
sition movements which should cause us to
sit up and take notice of what is transpiring,
so that we may realize that much is yet to
be done to mobilize world sentiment in sup-
port of Jewish claims.
A JTA report from Montreal states that—

The General Council of the United Church
of Canada, after a heated debate, has adopted
a resolutiotrZh Palestine urging Britain to
"continue her task in Palestine for which she
is peculiarly fitted by experience."
The resolution also deplored the '•unjust
criticisms of British endeavors on the part of
a section of our fellow citizens."

This is just one example of action result-
ing from the force of propaganda which has
overshadowed Jewish •appeals. It means,
simply, that the educational campaign in
behalf of the Jewish position must go on
unabated. It means, also, that non-Jews must
be given to understand that we have never
opposed administration of affairs in Pales-
tine by Great Britain, except when the man-
datory power undertakes to convert the Holy
Land into a police state and to oppress
Palestine's population.
Yes, much is yet to be done to set things
straight in the minds of our neighbors, and
all of us must help spread the truth about
our position.

Et tu, Brute!

Of conclave as in days of yore?
Rememberest thou Helvetia
When our banner fluttered high

O'er the flagstaffs of thy gates,

And Herzl was acclaimed by thee
And honors paid to him in full?
Why hide thy shame beneath a mask
Of subterfuge so ill disguised?
Dost emulate Great Britain's Lords,
Or perhaps a strict command
From the tyrant's webbed intrigue
To which thou obediently dost cleave?
Hide thy shame beneath a mask
Of pretext and of false design!
Rememberest thou Helvetia
When thou thyself wast once a slave
To an Eastern Empire?
When thy heroes rose in battle
And thy Tolls proclaimed thy freedom:
Thence thou rose to a nation
Free, untrammeled and uncaged.
And now with blunt refusal -
Thou deniest sanctuary
To a people, who in peaceful convocation
Seeks to solve its vital problems:
Yea, hide thy shame beneath a mask, Helvetia!

Our Duty to Community Chest

Within three weeks, another great fund-raising campaign
will commence in Detroit—in the form of the Red Feather
1946 Community Chest.
During the period of Oct. 28 to Nov. 13, ALL Detroit
citizens will be called upon to contribute to this drive, and
it is of the utmost importance that every one should help,
both as worker and as contributor.
With the disbandment of the War Chest, the Community
Chest assumes its pre-war status as unifier of its 125 services.
Jews, Catholics and Protestants are represented in the Com-
munity Chest, and all of us must share responsibility for the
success of the drive.
Detroit Jews must recognize the all-inclusiveness of this
drive as serving a great humanitariv purpose supplementary
to the great contributions already made through the Allied
Jewish Campaign. The Community Chest provides for the
needs of the following Detroit Jewish agencies:

Fresh Air Camp, Hebrew Free . Loan Association,
Jewish Community Center, Jewish Social Service
Bureau, Jewish Welfare Federation, North End Clinic.
Our Jewish school systems--United Hebrew Schools the

Yeshivah arid the Yiddish schools—are . provided for in the
Allied Jewish Campaign. But the six Community Chest
agencies just enumerated depend for their sustenance upon
the success of the Red Feather Drive. To make ,certain that
these agencies and the numerous Protestant and Catholic
services as well as the non-sectarian groups are provided
for,' all of us must give our liberal support to the coming

Rabbi Used Telescope
1;500 Yrs. Before Galileo

Did you know that Rabbi Gamliel used a tele-
scope 1,500 years before it was used by Galileo
(1609), who is credited with having been the first
scientist to use the instrument?
Or—
Were you ever told that Rabbi Simeon, son of
Gamliel, was able to throw up EIGHT flaming
torches in succession and, with one hand. caught
them as they descended, without any one touching
the other?
These are among the very odd facts Included in
Solomon Lenchitz's "Oddities From Hebraic Lit-
erature," published by Bloch Publishing Co., 31 W.
31st St., New York 1, N. Y.
Each oddity appears on a separate page, and
the facts are illustrated with full-page drawings.
The illustrations are by Sydney 0. Rove.
This most interesting brochure of only 45 pages
contains a wealth of material and fascinating
facts. The book is divided into two parts. dealing
with wonders and wisdom.
The author points out in his preface that his
principal motive is to "familiarize the youth of
our time with the fascinating facts that have come
to scholars after years of , intensive Talmudic study.
It is my fervent desire that this attempt to enrich
and supplement our basic literature will stimulate
the interest and attract the mind of the young to
study the sacred books of learning."
The Biblical facts incorporated in this book re-
veal, for instance, that Jochebed begat Moses at
the age of 130: that according to the Talmud there
are 1,062,340,000.000,000,000 stars in the sky, etc.

The Next World Zionist Congress

Switzerland has denied the World Zionist Organization
the right to meet in Basle, the city which had assumed
historic significance as the seat of the First Zionist Congress.
The Swiss decision drags world conditions down to .a
new low in intolerance by virtue of Switzerland's contention
that the presence of the Zionists will provoke increased

anti-Semitism.
Switzerland, traditional country of free assembly for
all shades of political opinion, thus takes her place with
reactionary countries, and her attitude, unless it changes
during the coming weeks, will reduce her position as a
libertarian nation.
In the meantime, Zionists are faced with the problem
of selecting a seat for the next Congress, which was to have
opened on Nov. 25.
There will be renewed talk regarding holding the Con-
gress in this country, which remains the freest nation on

earth.
Perhaps it would be wisest to hold the Congress in Lon-
don, at the very doorpost of the Colonial and Foreign Offices,
so that the iniquities of the present British Labor Govern-
ment may be exposed to full view.
Britain's present government is responsible for a reign of
terror in Palestine. It has imprisoned Israel's best sons. It
has taken the leaders of our people and has placed them
behind barbed wires, in defiance of the basic principles of
habeas corpus and trial by jury—principles which Britons
ordinarily claim to have been their creations. The British
have reconstituted the concentration camps, the devilish
creations of the Nazis, on Cyprus. They have instituted rule
by the gun rather than by just law.
These perfidies MUST be exposed, and a World Zionist
Congress, convened in London may be the most ideal way
of opening the eyes of the people of England to the disgust-

ing situation created .by their government.

munity of Israel praying for the welfare of man-
kind and for the improvement of the lot of our
people.
Next Wednesday evening will usher in the
series of happier festivals—the Sukkoth holiday
which will culminate with the joyous day of
Simhat Torah eight days thereafter.
This cycle of holydays and holidays is the most
important period on the Jewish calendar and all
of us should form that strong bond through these
festivals and their observances to achieve the
good for which we all strive.
I wish you all again a very Happy New Year.

Are books of common prayer indigenous to the
Jewish faith?
Yes. The compilation of Jewish books of com-
mon prayer was first attempted in the 6th cen-
tury. Since that time at least a score of importast

compilations have been made.
