Lehman Charges Prejudice
Foisted on U.S. Colleges

Accuses Universities of Permitting 'Numerus Clausus';
Calls for Remedial Legislation as Means of
Outlawing Discrimination

NEW YORK (JTA)—Charging that a "numerus clausus," which
he termed "one of the worst features of European culture." had
"foisted itself on the American educational system," ofrmer Gov.
Herbert Lehman urged the creation by New York State of a
special agency charged with outlawing discrimination in the field
of education.
Mr. Lehman spoke at a luncheon meeting of the New York
State Committee Against Discrimination.
Discussion centered around the Austin-Mahoney Bill. which
was drawn up by the Commission on Law and Social Action of
the American Jewish Congress.
Since the fight against discrimination must also be national
in scope, Mr. Lehman said, he advocated creation of a permanent
FEPC, anti-lynch and anti-poll tax legislation and also "revision
of our racist and restrictive immigration laws. - - We must demon-
strate to the world our willingness to welcome to our shores
thousands of displaced persons of all races, nationalities and creeds,"
he declared.
Dr. Goldstein Resigns from Einstein University Project
Dr. Israel Goldstein has resigned from the presidency of the
Albert Einstein Foundation for Higher Learning. the organization
announced through its board of directors, adding that Professor
Einstein's connection with the Foundation "remains unchanged."
It also announced that the Foundation is going ahead with
plans to set up a Jewish-sponsored non-sectarian university. open
to faculty and students without regard to race or religion.
Dr. Goldstein made the following announcement regarding his
resignation: "In view of the differences on matters of public rela-
tions and faculty selection which have arisen between Dr. Einstein
and myself, and believing that Dr. Einstein's association with the
university project is indispensable to its success. I have resigned
from the presidency of the Albert Einstein Foundation for Higher
Learning. Inc., thus ensuring Dr. Einstein's continued identification
with the Foundation."

Rosh Hashanah Rites Held in
Mess Halls, Synagogues for
Troops, Civilians

FRANKFURT, (J T A) — I n
order to help them celebrate the
High Holydays, displaced Jews in
the American zone were issued
extra food rations consisting of
16 tons of meat. 33 tons of flour,
six tons of butter, two tons of
honey and seven tons of raisins,
U. S. Army headquarters an-

nounced.
The food issue came after dis-
placed and German Jews, and
Allied military and civilian per-
sonnel attended Rosh Hashanah
services in makeshift synagogues
in the American zone. Services
in the larger ctiemweeaitparsn.-.i
in the larger cities were mainly
held in buildings converted for
the holidays, such as the Berlin
Rathaus and a university audi-
torium in Munich. Most DP camps
used regular synagogues, while
the newer camps which are still
without chapels converted their
messhalls or other spacious cham-
bers. Army chaplains also con-
ducted services for troops and
civilian employes, with DPs per-
mitted to attend.
Another holyday event took
place at a newly opened camp
for Jewish DP children 40 miles
from Munich, with the first dis-
tribution of Junior Red Cross
packages contributed by Ameri-
can school children. The 1,300
Jewish children_ received pack-
ages from every section of the
U. S., containing toilet articles,
toys, games and school supplies.

200 Refugees Stranded
By Delays in Shanghai

SHANGHAI, (JTA)—Approxi-
mately 200 Jewish refugees who

sult of delays at the U. S. Con-
sulate where they must obtain
transit visas necessary for pass-
ing through the western part cf
the United States.
The refugees have all passed a
special medical examination, re-
quired by the American consul,
and have submitted the necessary
visa applications which were
transmitted to Washington for
approval. However, no approval
has been received as yet,
