Campaign for Youth Aliyah

Hadassah Drive Helps Provide Funds
For Jewish Orphans Now in Palestine

Youth Aliyah, the movement for
the settlement of European Jewish
children in Palestine, is one of the
major beneficiaries in the impor-
tant fund-raising campaign now
being conducted by Detroit chap-
ter of Hadassah.
Youth Aliyah refers to the move-
ment which is taking Jewish ref-
ugee chNdren out of Europe and
elsewhere and resettling them and
re-educating them in Palestine. As
the official American representa-
tive of Youth Aliyah, Hadassah
h:L, provided the major share of
funds needed to maintain and edu-
cite nearly 20,000 fo ra new life.
Despite existing .iifficulties, more
than 3.000 children have "escaped"
to Palestine in the past nine
months. This is the most concen-
tiate0 youth immigration ever
kooyn. The majority are orphans
who have wandered from land to
land. often spending months and
years in foul prisons or camps.
They range in age from infancy to
seventeen.

Zionism Must Sever Its Interests
From Empire to Succeed, Rabbi Says 1

If Zionism is to succeed, it
must sever its interests from those
of the British Empire, according
to an article in the September
Commentary, a monthly magazine
of Jewish affairs and world issues.
In "Empire and Zionism: A
Bankrupt Partnership", Rabbi
Victor Eppstein, author and lect-
urer, says it is obvious that the
Labor government, despite its
pre-election promises, has no in-
tention of changing the tradition-
al British policy of maintaining an
agrarian policy in the Middle
East. •
The Balfour Declaration, Ep-
pstein contends, was made in

good faith, for the British knew
agrarian Palestine could support
a few thousand Jews while re-
flecting humanitarian credit on
Britain and increasing her foot-
hold in the eastern Mediterranean.
But the British could not foresee
the wave of anti-Smitism which
swept Europe.
"European Jewish immigrants
inevitably must foment in Pales-
tine the industrial revolution that
Britain has traditionally opposed
in every country in the world.
The Empire cannot be maintained

unless Britain staves off the in- A
dustrialization of the East. Once
the whole world has experienced
the industrial revolution, there is
little reason to suppose that 45,-

000,000 people inhabiting a re-
mote North Atlantic island . . .
would be able to fulfill an qco-
nomic role of any world signifi-
cance."
As for the armed clashes in
Palestine. Eppstein explains that
the Jews' fight with the British
has never been a battle against
the Empire. On the contrary, "the
Jews have taken every occasion
to make clear their loyalty to the
Empire and its aims."
