Center's Health Facilities Among Finest

A Message from the President









Through this Supplement we bring you the thrilling and dynamic
message of the Jewsh Community Center, and our certainty that the
New Year will bring us renewed strength and wisdom to meet our
increasing obligations and responsibilities for your welfare. We have
concluded a most eventful year, thanks to the magnificent, financial sup-
port. guidance and inspiration of the Community Chest, the Jewish
Welfare Federation, United Jewish Charities and National JWB.
With your interest and support we shall continue to strive for the
objective of the Center movement: the fusion of the finest of Judaism
and Americanism.

SAMUEL H. RUBINER

Basketball Program

Thirty-eight team with 410 players in
five leagues played 238 games last year.
Staffed by 11 full time persons, the health
education facilities include a shower room,
lockers, health club, three handball courts,
three squash counts, two gyms. Mr. Rubin-

stein is in charge of the basket room.

Health Club membership privileges include in-
dividual dressing booths, private showers, elec-
tric heat cabinet, ultra violet ray lamp, infra-
red heat lamp, private rest room and lounge. a
special exercise room, use of gymnasia, handball
courts, squash courts, sun roof and swimming
pool. There are three massage tables.

Boxing

groups are conducted
in combative sports
(above). Facilities for
volley ball. badmin-
ton. fencing. and
other gym activities
are vailable there.

Dance

Modern dancing
classes for beginners
are conducted. The
group (right) is one
of the most popular
in dance programs in
Detroit.

Body Building

Swimming Pool

Sixty per cent of members who exercise
also include the pool in their routine. Ample
hours for all age groups are available. Swim-
ming and life saving instruction, mixed
swims. splash parties and water polo under
expert supervision are provided.

Snack Bar

Members and visitors go to the snack bar
before and after meetings. during dance and
lecture intermissions, and after the exercise.
Moderate in price, the Casino service is tops.

Instructor prepares a chart of exercises tailored to
meet the body-building needs of the individual mem-
ber. weight lifting is popular among members over 18.

Center Highlights

Adult Education

Under the direction of Harry Katz, the Center provides a full
Adult Education program of English and citizenship classes for new-
comers. elementary and advanced art, arts and crafts, public speak-
ing, book chats, music appreciation, photography, dramatics. choral
group, symphony orchestra, CENTER NEWS, films, lectures. con-
certs, art exhibits, dance recitals, classes in -Yiddish and Jewish
subjects, and Yiddish cultural evenings.

Clubs and Classes

There are club programs and classes for all age groups at the
Center: Juniors—(described on p. 3) ; Intermediates — social clubs,
national agency programs (BBYO, Habonim, Zionist Youth), Girl
Scouts, photography, dramatics, journalism, dances, Parties, discus-
sion group, chess, lounge, canteen, Jive Junction: Sub - Seniors-
journalism (CENTER NEWS), photography, chess, dramatics, dance
classes, boys, girls and co-ed social clubs; Seniors—social dance
classes, modern dance, personality development, discussion groups,
men's, women's and co-ed social clubs, lounge, lectures, teas, club
leadership, veterans groups.

Extensions

12th Street Council Center: In cooperation with the Detroit
Section, National Council of Jewish Women, the Center maintains
an extension program at 8687 12th St. It furnishes supervised r _ ece.
reation for children and youth. Harold Weiss. is the director.
Dexter Area: Under the direction of Sam Neuschatz, eight club*
meet in the D. W. Simons Hebrew School, Tuxedo at Holmur, Tues.•
day and Wednesday, and alternate Saturday evenings.

Northwest Area: The Center operates several clubs sad
weekly gym program in the Northwest Area.
Plans are under way for elaboration of the Extension Units„
