THE JEWISH NEWS Friday, September 20, 1946 Sound the Trumpet 'A History of Jewish Art' Prof. Landsberger's Volume Shows Restrictions a Myth UNION OF American Hebrew Congregations has rendered an- other great contribution to Jewish literature by publishing "A His- tory of Jewish Art" by Dr. Franz Landsberger, Hebrew Union Col- lege professor. The volume is impressive and informative and its illustrations increase its interest. In the editor's introduction to the book, Dr. Emanuel Gamoran, director of the publications de- partment of UAHC, explains that the coming of Prof. Landsberger, eminent exile from Germany, to Hebrew Union College, afforded an opportunity to have a great authority describe the history and the development of Jewish art. • • • DR. LANDSBERGER disproves as a myth the 'belief that as a re- sult of the restrictions believed to have been inherent in the Second Commandment Jews refrained from contributing to art. The numerous examples quoted in this history substantiate the author's contentions. Decorations in synagogues, various art objects collected for generations, the manner in which religious and home articles have been deco- rated by craftsmen—all serve to prove that there is a greater apti- tude for art among Jews than people realize. • • • TECHNIQUES OF art by Jews are adequately reviewed in this history. Conceding that the Sec- ond Commandment had a crip- pling effect on Jewish artists, the author points out that Jewish characteristics nevertheless exist in the works of many Jewish artists. The synagogue and the home have had a strong influence upon the artists. The art objects re- produced in the book's illustra- tions are certain to be the envy of even the most scrupulous col- lectors. Tefillin boxes, mezzuzot, alms boxes, Torah cases and pointers —these are among the articles which have been so delicately carved by Jewish artists as to make them stand out for their artistry. • • • PROF. LANDSBERGER'S chapters on "The Jewish Year" and "From the Cradle to the Grave" are among the fascinat- ing portions of the book which throw new light on the subject of Jewish art. The photos of the Chair of Elijah, the Circumcision Knife, the Silver Bridal Belt, a Bridal Ring and other items emphasize the-beauty of Jewish creations. The section on "The Develop- ment of Jewish Art" is an excel- lent historical resume. It takes us back to the beginnings of Jewish art in Biblical days, covers the periods of Judges and Kings, the Second Temple, the Middle Ages, the eras of the modern and emancipation periods. Works of modern artists in- clude the outstanding Jewish names of our own time. Archi- tectural works, paintings of Jewish Wanderers, holiday ob- servances and life among Jews in cities and villages are amply covered in the book. The bibliography is another excellent addition to this very valuable work. `Light Pink Dean' Jews Feel Insecure In Europe, Canadian Congress Leader Says By The Editor of Independent Jewish Press Service Moscow had its Red Dean of MONTREAL, (JTA)—Jews in Canterbury, the British Labor many European countries have a Government has its light pink act- strong sense of insecurity.
