alone, escaped death in a party
of 14 when the betrayers duped
them into hiding in a cave. then
bombed it. Later, Zweigman was
caught and shunted from one
concentration camp to another.
His parents and a sister were sent

What is Jewish education?
Some of us define it in religious
terms, others in national terms:
some stress tradition. others em-
phasize ethics. Jewish education
is not one, bit all of these things.
In ancient days. illiteracy
amongst our people was almost
as disgraceful as crime or sin.
Maimonides admonished: - Every
man of Israel is obliged to study
the Torah. be he poor or rich. well
or afflicted. young or very old and
feeble. Even a poor man living
on charity and going about seek-
ing alms. must set apart periods.
day and night. for study of the
Torah. And thus he must do until
the day of his death. for when-
ever he fails to devote himself to
study. he is sure to forget."
If Israel is to survive on this
hemisphere. Jewish education
must be a major communal activ-
ity.
How can we do away with Jew-
ish self-hate? The answer is: by
helping our children to develop
inner defenses. Let us teach the
child to re-live Judaism from day
to day. to share in all its glories.
in its wonderful history. in its re-
ligion, in its customs and cere-
monies, in its aspirations for n.
homeland. Let us tell them again
the stories of the Prophets. the he-
roism of our forefathers.
