Great Advances in Palestine
For Jewish Labor Movement
By RABBI MORRIS ADLER
In a message issued on the oc-
casion of the New Year 5707,
Rabbi Morris Adler of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek states:
"The year 5707 does not open
auspiciously for Israel. A year or
more after victory finds libera-
tion still far off for the broken
remnants of our people in Europe.
The homeland is in the very midst
of a precarious struggle for its
life and its rights. American Jew-
ry has not yet shown signs of
meriting the responsibility and
leadership which the tragic hour
has thrust upon it. Rosh Hashan-
ah bids us look at the situation
and at ourselves with unflinching
clarity and critically to analyze
the circumstanc with deter-
mined honesty.

dying visions and wearied ideals.
These powers of spiritial recovery
can be realized to bring about a

This is a composite picture of activities of Jewish settlers in
labor Zionist settlements in Palestine.
H. Frumkin. economic advisor to the Histadrut, Jewish Federa-
tion of Labor in Palestine, reports that the total number of Jewish
workers in Palestine (not including the wives of the workers) as of
the beginning of 1946 was 163,000 men and women workers, as
against 157,000 at the beginning of 1945.
Mr. Frumkin reveals that the number of adults in the Palestine
agricultural settlements if, now 29,000 as against 26.500 in the begin-
ning of 1943. He also reports:
"Last year was not a good year for mixed agriculture from the
point of view of weather. Nevertheless, the general picture is one
of expansion. Thus: the quantity of milk produced by the Jewish
settlements amounted to 68,000,000 litres in 1945 in comparison with
61,500,000 in 1944. Similarly, 81,000,000 eggs in 1945 as against
74,000.000 in 1944."

A homeless people—stranded, afloat,
Huddled together on a rickety old boat.
Hoping to reach the Promised Land,
Where they are offered a helping hand.
But with only a glimpse of this cov-
eted shore.
They are turned away to drift some
more,
For political minds do not deem it wise.
Thus ignore completely their agonizing
cries,
And turn instead to tanks and guns
To keep from this land het native sons.
Though vastly outnumbered, they wage
a valiant fight,
After the darkness must come the light.
And when seemingly beaten, they hold
their heads high.
For the Spirit of Israel never shall die!
