the Trumpet for Freedom
The Dawn of a New Era
Jewry's hopes and prayers on the advent of the New
Year 5707 are for the end of the miseries occasioned by war
and bigotry and for the cessation of inter-group hatreds
which were intensified by suspicions and greeds during the
first year of peace.
Our hope and prayer is that the New Era for which tens
of millions have fought, for which millions have died, will
become a reality in our time.
Only a year ago, as we prepared to greet the year now
coming to an end, Jews everywhere were full of confidence
that the miseries of the past soon would be forgotten, and
that the ideals of true and abiding democracy would domin-
ate all mankind.
Unfortunately, the realization of these aspirations
again has been deferred.
But as we usher in another sacred year, we must hold
fast to the faith that the reactions which have set in and
the recrudescence of hatred are only temporary.
In 5707 we must once again think in terms of carrying
on a battle for justice for all mankind. A free humanity
will mean a free Jewry; an enslaved and impoverished
world, by the same token, will mean the continuation of
suffering for Israel.
