NEW YORK, (JPS)—Declaring
that Palestine alone cannot solve
the problem of homeless Jewish
refugees, 59 prominent Americans
have urged, in a letter to Presi-
dent Truman, that the United
States and all other nations ad-
mit "a fair number" of refugees.
President Truman, in a statement
last August 16, said -he contem-
plated asking Congress for legis-
lation to admit a "fixed" number
of displaced persons, "including
Jews," into this country.
Among those who signed the
letter to the President were Van
Wyck Brooks, Jonothan Daniels,
Dr. Stephen Duggan, Dorothy
Canfield Fisher, Msgr. K J. Flan-
agan, Professor Philip C. Jessup,
Dr. Alvin Johnson, Henry R. Uuce,
Basil O'Connor, Professor Ralph
Barton Perry, Walter Reuther,
Owen J _Roberts, Mrs. Eleanor
Roosevelt, Bishop Bernard J.
Sheil, Charles P Taft, Bishop H.

NEW YORK — Joseph Schloss-
berg, chairman of the National
Committee for Labor Palestine,
Inc., announced the official open-
ing of the 23rd annual Palestine
Histadrut Campaign for the or-
ganized Jewish pioneers in Pal-
e - tine.
The quota of $5.000.000 was
adopted by the board of directors
of the campaign, at a meeting in
national headquarters, 45 E. 17th
Street.
Isaac Hamlin, secretary of the
National Committee for Labor,
Palestine, reported to the board
that the Histadrut budget for 1946-
1947 amounted to $18,000,000, of
which the people in Palestine
would contribute $13,000.000. The
balance of $5,000.000 must be
raised through voluntary contri-
butions in United States. Last
year, the organization raised $2.-
200.000.
