THE WAR may be over, but
its stories are without end. . . .
especially the many which clar-
ify the meaning of all men be-
ing equal under one God . . .
who recognizes no difference in
faith and religion . At the
height of a bitter battle on
Saipan, a dozen GIs, Protestant
and Roman Catholics, found
themselves trapped in a fox-
hole with a Jewish army chap-
lain. . . They were caught
under a constant barrage of
machine gun fire and an all-
too-perfect shelling from Jap
mortars. . The fire came
closer and closer until it seem-
ed that the entire Jap attack
was concentrated on that one
little fox-hole. . . The boys
turned to the one non-Christian
among them and asked, "Chap-
lain Rosenbaum, what about a
prayer?". . . With the ac-
companiment of pounding of
mortars and the increasing tic-
tac-tac of enemy machine guns,
the chaplain repeated the 23rd
Psalm: "THE LORD IS MY
SHEPHERD. I SHALL NOT
WANT. HE MAKETH ME—"
. . The 12 Christian GIs and
the lone Jewish chaplain pray-
ing for them in a death trap
on Saipan were all saved. . . .
