Greater Palestine has been con-
demned by Dr. Walter Clay Low-
dermilk, author of the proposed
Jordan Valley Authority, because
it "prevents the carrying out of a
coordinated and full development
of irrigation and power possibili-
ties of this unique area."
The development of a Jordan
Valley Authority, similar in soope
and function to our own TVA, was
proposed by Dr. Lowdermilk in
1944 in his book, "Palestine, Land
of Promise."
An important phase of the work
of the JVA was to integrate the
firming and grazing economies
which exist side by side in Pales-
tine.
•In a letter to the London Times
itf which he, discussed the effect
of the partition on the proposed
Jordan Valley Authority, Dr. Low-
dermilk said:
"To set up Transjordan as .a
separate state can neither be in
the interests of the Arabs nor of
the Jews, nor of the land. It is a
gross violation of the geographic
unity of the area and of principles
of conservation, and is a barrier
to a long-range constructive solu-
tion to the problem of Palestine."
Dr. Lowdermilk's strongest ob-
jection to the partition in terms
of the Jordan Valley Authority
was that it would not now be pos-
sible for Transjordan, a largely
non-agricultural grazing land, to
benefit from the development of
the farms of the Jordan Valley.
In his opinion it would negate
that phase of the JVA which
sought to harmonize the two
economies.
On Aug. 10, Dr. Lowdermilk
wrote to the New Yol:k Times ex-
pressing opposition to the plan for
the division of Palestine.
"No political set-up," Dr. Low-
dermilk wrote, "can long endure
!unless supported by land in a state
of sustained production. Geog-
raphers, engineers, agriculturists,
economists and men of good-will,
in my opinion, will find little jus-
tification for the separation of
transjordan from Greater Pales-
tine. Such action can not long en-

Farewell Message of
the JEWISH BRIG-
ADE on its .Forced
Dissolution:

JEWISH BRIGADE

The emergence of a
Jewish Volunteer force
was nourished by two impulses—
the rebirth of the Jewish people
in its Homeland and the immense
catastrophe of the exile. It was
inspired by the Jewish determin-
ation to join, as equals, in the
ranks of nations fighting the foe.
The path toward this goal was
long and difficult. After per-
sistent and unceasing efforts by
Jewish volunteers, the "Jewish
Soldier" came into being . .
The "Jewish Soldier" had to
fight hard for the right to face
the enemy as a Jew. For years
he was denied the .right to raise
his flag—the flag of the Jewish
nation. At the front, at last,
amidst artillery fire, in the slit
trenches, and with his dead be-
fore him—the Jewish flag rose
above Jewish combattant.

Fought for Israel

Determined and aware, with
burning heart impelling him to-
ward the front and his people in
exile — despite the strangling
shame of the White Paper—the
"Jewish Soldier" left his country,
crossed the sea, fought and spilled
his blood—saving and guarding
the honor and freedom of Israel
throughout Europe.
The appearance of the Jew as
a Fighting Force was evidence of
a momentous change in a world
so long accustomed to the sight
of the Jew—beaten, weak, passive
object of human savagery.
Through its soldiers, the Yishuv
gave new strength to the tragic
remnants of Jewry. They came
—the first spokesmen of the
Yishuv in uniform—bringing the
message of "Unity", "Liquidation
of the Exile", "Halutziut", "Aliya
against all odds", "A Jewish
State."
At their first encounter at the
gates of the concentration camps
where the shadow of death still
hovered, a fraternal bond was
