Catholic Priest Gives
$1,000 to UJA Drive

Emphasizing that "no race suf-
fered so much at the hands of
'tier as the Jews of Europe,"
v, Edmond Gelinas, a Catholic
.riest of Fort Pierce, Fla., has
I ade a contribution of $1,000 to
he nationwide $100,000,000 cam-
'aign of the United Jewish Ap-

peal for Refugees, Overseas Needs
and Palestine.
Fr. Gelinas' gift is one of the
largest contributions made by an
individual clergyman to the rec-
ord drive to assure the survival
of the 1,400,000 Jews remaining in
Europe. In forwarding his gift to
the United Jewish Appeal, Rev.
Gelinas expressed a desire "to be
of some help to the remaining
Jews of Germany and of the re-
occupied countries".

Canadian Investigators
Of Spies Criticized for
Injecting Jewish Issue

NEW YORK (JTA)—The state-
ment by a Canadian Royal Corn-
mission investigating "Soviet spy
activities" that "the natural re-
action of persons of Jewish origin
to racial discrimination was one
of the factors played upon by the
Communists' recruiting agents,"
is attacked in the current issue of

"The Churchman," independent
Protestant monthly.
Pointing to the fact that an in-
vestigator of the Wood-Rankin
Committee here denounced all
groups fighting anti-Semitism as
"Communist transmission belts,"
the magazine says that "we can
now expect that all those who
seek to prevent utilization of
atomic power for destructive pur-
poses and who hate anti-Semitism
will be denounced as 'Commu-
nist.' "

if the interests
I controlling Michigan Consolidated
Gas Company succeed in their plans to
get a monopoly on Detroit's gas supply,
you and the other gas users of Detroit
will pay the lion's share of the cost of a
duplicate pipeline. This system will cost at least $84,000,000!

IVES, MRS. DETROIT,

"But, I don't understand. What's the matter with
our present supply?"

Nothing at all. Panhandle Eastern's lines have provided more
than enough gas for your needs for the past ten years. And when
Panhandle Eastern completes its current construction program,
the enlarged system will be fully capable of meeting all of your
future needs, however great.

"Aren't we already paying for one pipeline?"

You are. That is, Detroit's gas users have already helped to pay
a substantial part of the original cost of Panhandle Eastern's
system. However, under the plans of Michigan Consolidated
interests, you will lose all benefit of this investment and start

raying all over again for a new line.

'TRANSPORTING NATURAL GAS FROM

GUARDIAN BUILDING

"That's ridiculous! Haven't the people of Detroit
been told these facts?".

Indeed they have. Just recently James H. Lee, Assistant Cor-
poration Counsel of Detroit, was quoted as follows by the
Detroit Times: "Michigan Consolidated wants a pipeline and

wants to create a shortage so that the Federal Power Commission

will grant it permission to go ahead and build it. The City of

Detroit isn't interested in the Panhandle Company, and neither is

it interested in Michigan Consolidated. It is interested in getting

enough

gas. That gas is available and the consumers could get

It shortly after Pandhandle and Michigan reached an agreement.

Unless they do this, there is no telling how long the city will be

without an adequate supply. Even if Michigan Consolidated gets

permission to build a pipeline * * * it may be years before such

a line is completed.i!

"I see. And meanwhile, I suppose; our gas short..
age continues?"

Exactly, in complete disregard of your urgent need for more
gas, Michigan Consolidated refuses to negotiate with Pan-
handle Eastern for the additional supply soon to be available,
