Friday, August Page Three THE JEWISH NEWS 9, 1946 `Don't Push These People Around' British Govt Disavows Text of General's Insult Sir Barker's Language Used in Non-Fraternization Order fo British Troops in Palestine Brings Protests From World Jewry, Christian Leaders LONDON, (JTA)—The British government after a Cabinet meet- ing at which Gen. Evelyn Barker's non-fraternization order was dis- cussed this week disassociated itself from the language used in the order. The announcement was made by Herbert Morrison, govern- ment spokesman in Commons, during the Palestine debate. The Communist Daily Worker declared that Colonial Office offi- cials held anxious consultations after the publication of Barker's anti-' Semitic letter. It adds that Labor Party MPs are expressing indigna- tion at the document. British Asked by Committee to Disavow Barker Order NEW YORK, (JTA)—The British government was asked by the American Jewish Committee to disavow the letter issued by Gen, Barker. In a letter to Lord Inverchapel, British Ambassador to the U. S., David Sher, chairman of the administrative committee of the organization, stated that the "calumnous and gratuitous language" of the order "resembles the vituperation of Hitler. It is especially ap- palling to hear it froin a British official." The American Christian Palestine Committee, speaking for thou- sands of U. S. Christian religious and lay leaders, assailed the order issued to all British military units in Palestine by Gen. Barker, Brit- ish commander-in-chief in that country, as "renewed evidence that Britain will stoop so low as to spread anti-Semitic lies and appeal to the very worst in huinan nature in order to carry out her ignominious policies in Palestine." General Barker Removed Once for Co-operation With Nazis JERUSALEM, (JPS-Palcor)-Sir Evelyn Barker, who ordered his troops to show "contempt and loathing" for Palestine's Jews and to "Strike at their pockets—a way which this race understands as any," was "removed from his earlier command of British forces at Schles- wig-Holstein owing to his co-operation with local Nazis and Junkers," "Hapoel," a weekly published by Hechalutz (Pioneers for Palestine) Organization of Stockholm, Sweden, charges in its July 1, issue just received here. The weekly charges that "after this (his removal) he was transferred - to Palestine for actions against Jews." Removal of Gen. Barker as commander in chief of Palestine forces if he is actually the author of the alleged order of the day, branding every Jew in Palestine an accomplice of the terrorists and exhorting British troops to hold them "in contempt and loathing," was demanded in an editorial in the Daily Herald, Labor Party organ. LaGuardia Discovers 90 Pct. of Jews In D P Camps ■ \ ant to Go to Palestine MUNICH, (JTA)—Fiorello H. LaGuardia, Direc- tor-General of UNRRA, visited the Foehrenwald and Feldafing camps for displaced Jews near here on his tour of relief and rehabilitation facilities in Europe. LaGuardia would not comment on the reason for his . visit, but it is known that it is in regard to im- migration and the eventual fate of the DPs after UNRRA goes out of existence at the end of this year. He questioned the occupants of the camps as to the places to which they wish to emigrate. The response was shouted loudly and repeatedly : "Pal- estine, Palestine." At the Feldafing camp he asked whether they would be willing . to go anywhere else —perhaps South America. Their answer was: "No." It is estimated that at least 90 per cent of the dis- placed Jews polled by LaGuardia elected to go to Palestine. `Don't Push Them Around' At Foehrenwald, when an Army officker at- tempted to force back a group of Jews crowding around the UNRRA chief, LaGuardia said: "Don't push these people around, they've been pushed around more than enough." . Following his visits to the camps, LaGuardia ad- dressed a meeting of UNRRA officials in the Munich zone and urged them to use kindness and patience in handling the DPs. The Jewish Central Committee charged that cer- tain army officials had distorted the facts concern- ing last week's disturbances at the Foehrenwald DP camp in which one Jew was killed and several wounded. - The . charges were contained in sworn affidavits submitted to Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein, advisor on Jewish affairs to Gen. McNarney. The committee accused the army newspaper, Stars and Stripes, of acting as a "mouthpiece for false stories," and of publishing "only the official army announcement although its correspondent was present during the disturbances." According to the documents submitted to Rabbi Bernstein, a German mail truck which picked up two Jewish DPs on their way from Wolfrathausen. to Foehrenwald was stopped by two German police- men named Mueller and Ankerr. One of the police- men remained on his motorcycle while the other argued with the driver about speeding and also harangued the two Jews. A heated argument ensued and one of the po- licemen fired into the air, causing a panic among a small group of DPs who had gathered outside the camp's gates. At this point the policeman who had remained on his motorcycle fired at the group, kill- ing Isaac Feldberg and wounding Reuben Machteh. The two policemen then sped towards Munich and informed military authorities that they had been attacked by DPs. This version of the incident was revealed at headquarters of the Counter-Intelligence Corps by Simcha Rubinstein, a DP who at one time was well- known in Poland as a boxer. Gen. McNarney Invites Wise, Goldmann to Discuss Jewish Problem FRANKFURT, (JTA)—Gen. J. T. McNarney, com- mander of U. S. forces in the European Theater, has invited Drs. Stephen S. Dr. Wise and Dr. Goldmann have requested that the invitation be held open until this week-end be- cause they will be engaged until then at the Paris meeting of the Jewish Agency executive and world Zionist leaders. Bernstein Says Jews Fleeing to U. S. Zones Comprise 94% of Total DPs WARSAW, (JTA)—Jewish refugees from Poland make up 94 per cent of the displaced persons streaming into the American military zones in Aus- tria and Germany, it was stated here by Rabbi Philip S. Bernstein. advisor on Jewish Affairs to Gen. Joseph T. McNarney. Rabbi Bernstein is re- turning to Berlin to report on his survey directly to Gen. McNarney. 3d Jew Slain In Aftermath Of Lynchings Hungarian Mob, Protesting Arrest of Killers, Murder Police Official BUDAPEST, (JTA)—The Jewish community of Miskolc, 80 miles from here. where two Jews were lynched earlier this week, is in a state of panic following outbreaks by thousands of anti-Semitic dem- onstrators'. Minister of the Interior Laszlo Rajk has arrived in the city. Before leaving he said that, if necessary, he will call upon Red Army occu- pation troops to maintain order. Police have been ordered to fire at demonstrators who refuse to disperse. Broke into Police Building Enraged because 16 persons who participated in the - murder of the two Jews had been arrested, a crowd broke into the police build- ing at Miskolc and murdered Ar- thur Fraenkel, a Jew, who was head of the political investigation department. The murder climaxed a demon- stration by 25,000 persons who marched through the town de- manding the release of the sixteen. Jewish circles charge that the po- lice did little to curb the rioters. The two original victims, millers named Frendreisz and Rejtoe, had been charged with violating price regulations. As police were taking them to a labor camp, they were set upon by a group of iron work- ers from the Diosgyoer and Ozd plants. There are indications that. there had been considerable agitation in the iron works and that the lynch- ings were not spontaneous. Bulgarian Premier to Aid JDC Rehabilitation Plan SOFIA.
