George Higgins, of the NCWC Social Action department, in honor of the late Sidney Hill- man. Fr. Higgins says in part: "Sidney Hillman—God rest him! —will be mourned as much by the employers in the garment industry as by the members of his own union. For Sidney Hillman, with a genius which even some of his bitterest political enemies have graciously acknowledged (in obit- uaries), did as much for the wel- fare of the one group as for the welfare of the other. ". .. The employers with whom be bargained for so many years as president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America .. . are the first to admit with a sense of real gratitude, that Hillman JEWISH NEWS did more perhaps than any other single individual to bring at least a reasonable measure of prosper- ity to a chaotically-disorganized industry . . . He was almost reli- giously devoted to the common good . . "Hillman was not a Communist; but he was tagged as a Corn- munist by his enemies. He was not a revolutionary; but he was called a revolutionary by his cri- tics. He was not in favor of state Socialism; but his enemies re- peatedly said that he was. Page Thirteen "Hillman's PAC philosophy— just as his economic philosophy in the garment industry—was . . . . strikingly in line with the pro- gram of the Popes' social encycli- cals . . "The Ainerican people will gratefully remember the contri- bution which he made to the gen- eral economic welfare. They will join with the editors of America in hoping that 'in death he will find a peace he never knew in life—and that his thirst for justice will at last be satisfied'." 285 Shanghai Refugees Leave for Australia SHANGHAI, (JTA)—Two hun- , dred and eighty-five Jewish men, women and children, the largest contingent of refugees to leave here for overseas since the capit- ulation of Japan, sailed for Aus- tralia aboard the S. This system will cost at least $84,000,000! Indeed they have. Just recently James H. Lee, Assistant Cor- poration Counsel of Detroit, was quoted as follows by the Detroit Times: "Michigan Consolidated wants a pipeline and wants to create a shortage so that the Federal Power Commission will grant it permission to go ahead and build it. The City of "But, I don't understand. What's the matter with our present supply?" Detroit isn't interested in the Panhandle Company, and neither ,is it interested in Michigan Consolidated. Unless they do this, there is no telling how long the city will Lie without an adequate supply. Even if Michigan Consolidated gets permission to build a pipeline * * * it may be years before such a line is completed." "Aren't we already paying for one pipeline?" "I see. And meanwhile, I suppose, our gas short- age continues?" You are. That is, Detroit's gas users have already helped to pay a substantial part of the original cost of Panhandle Eastern's system. However, under the plans of Michigan Consolidated interests, you will lose all benefit of this investment and start Exactly, in complete disregard of your urgent need for more gas, Michigan Consolidated refuses to negotiate with Pan- handle Eastern for the additional supply soon to be available, Paying all over again for a new line.
