Special Cables to The Jewish News

TEL AVIV, (JRA)—Sixteen thousand British airborne
troops of the Sixth Airborne Division invaded Tel Aviv at
2 a. m. Tuesday and began house to house searches looking
for perpetrators of the King David Hotel blasting. A curfew
was instituted with a two hour lifting every 24 hours to
permit the inhabitants to obtain food.

LONDON (JTA) — The new
British proposals for Palestine
are described by Dr. Chaim
Weizmann as having all the dis-
advantages of the Peel Commis-
sion's plan, which has issued in
1937, and none of the advantages.
The Zionist leader says that he
has heard nothing official con-
cerning the new plan.
In an address read for him to
a mass meeting in the Palace
theater here this week Dr. Weis-
mann, who was unable to attend
because of ill health, said that
Jews throughout the world con-
demn the bombing of the King
David Hotel. The Jewish com-
munity of Palestine, he added
must not only condemn, but must
exert all efforts to insure that
"such a crime is never again pos-
sible."

Dr. Weizmann pointed out,
however, that a "lamentable thing
was done to the Yishuv on June
29." Life cannot be normal in a
country where any citizen can be
arrested without a warrant or
reason, where a strict censorship
prevails and where thousands of
men and women languish in de-
tention camps for months, Dr.
Weizmann continued.

Aggravate Situation
"What the British and the Jews
need more than anything else in
Palestine today is normality," he
added.
Searches and arrests have ag-
gravated the situation, which was
already tense as the result of pro-
crastintaion over the admission of
the 100,000 Jews recommended by
the inquiry committee and by
President. Truman.

hundreds of so-called "illegal"
Jewish immigrants, many of
whom at the risk of their lives,
brought photographs and draw-

Writting in the Palestine Post,
Mr. Shefi describes how during
the war years he interrogated
hundreds of Jewish immigrants
who gave him information, vital
to the planning of Allied bombing
and other military operations,
particularly concerning central
and southern Europe, and from
which he prepared over a thou-

American High Commands.

Palestine Is Only Answer
to Jewish Problem

BERLIN (JTA)—Speaking to a
group of more than a hundred
Allied military and civilian offi-
cials at the first such meeting in

the Jewish Club of Berlin, Rabbi
Philip S. Bernstein, advisor on
Jewish Affairs to Gen. Joseph T.
McNarney, praised the coopera-
tion and sympathetic understand-
ing shown by top military officials
in Germany and Austria toward
displaced Jews.
Following talks with hundreds
of Jewish DPs in almost every
camp in the American zone in
Germany and Austria, Rabbi
Bernstein declared he was con-
vinced the sole answer to the Jew-
ish problem was migration, add-
ing that "migration means 'Pal-
estine' for at least 90 per cent"
of the displaced Jews.
