THE JEWISH NEWS

Daily News Accused of Racial
Bias at FM License Hearing

Most of $24,000,000
Palestine Diamond
Export Comes to U S.

Jewish Congress, Protesting N. Y. Paper's Plea for Radio
Rights, Presents Anti-Semitism Survey as
Evidence, Wins Legal Point

WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
diamond industry in Amsterdam,
which led the world before the
war in gem processing, is now
faced with serious competition
from the new Palestinian diamond
industry, according to the Foreign
Commerce Weekly. Total value of
exports of polished diamonds from
Palestine jumped from approxi-
mately $14,000,000 in 1944 to al-
most $24,000,000 in 1945, the ar-
ticle states. Shipments to the U. S.
accounted for 70 to 88 per cent
of this total.

NEW YORK (JTA)—The charge that the New York
Daily News fosters anti-Semitism and racial animosities was
made by the American Jewish Congress at a hearing here
on an application by the News for an FM radio broadcast
license.
Will Maslow, director of the Commission on Law and

Social Action of the Congress,
presented copies of editorial and
news items appearing in the News
in recent months. Among the ex-
hibits were ten News editorials
containing anti-Semitic innuendos,
and eight columns by John O'Don-
nell, News Washington columnist,
which ranged frofti a reprint in
1938 of an anti-Semitic pamphlet
by Silver Shirt leader Pelley, to his
column about Gen. Patton and
the Jews, and the more recent
false report about the "resigna-
tions" of four Supreme Court
Judges, which President Truman
branded as "fantastically untrue";
also three articles with pictures
purporting to show that the meat
shortage was caused by kosher
slaughterers.

No Infringement of Freedom

Mr. Maslow also submitted a
comparative • analysis of all news
pertaining to Jews which appear-
ed in all the New York morning

newspapers for a period of six
months. The survey, prepared by
two members of the staff of the
New School for Social Research.
showed that the ratio of favorable
to unfavorable news concerning
Jews appearing in the News was
5'7 to 43, while the average ratio
in the other papers was 84 to 16.
The survey showed that the News'
treatment of news concerning
Negroes was even more biased.
The newspaper's attorney, Louis
G. Caldwell, objected to introduc-
tion of the exhibits and to the
questioning of F. M. Flynn, busi-
ness manager of the News, on the
basis that the- questioning was an
infringement of freedom of the
press. However, the presiding ex-
aminer of the Federal Communica-
tions Commission ruled against
him, declaring that he had dis-
cussed the question with FCC
headquarters in Washington.

Billikopf Reveals Few Jewish GIs
Are Cited Before Clemency Boards

NEW YORK—In a letter to
Louis Kraft, executive director
of the Army and Navy Committee
of the Jewish Welfare Board,
Jacob Billikopf discloses several
interesting cases in which he con-
curred as a civilian chairman of
one of three Military Clemency
Boards.
One of the outstanding social
workers in the country, Billikopf
writes that very few cases of Jew-
ish GI's have come to his atten-
tion. His letter follows:
"The Jewish Welfare Board
has a great many achievements
to its credit, not the least import-
ant of which is the survey of Jew-
ish men and women in the Armed
Forces—a study which is of such
vast importance to our people.
What follows will probably be of
interest to you and your associ-
ates.
"By July 1 the three Military
Clemency Boards, of one of which

Fists Fly in Los Angeles
Palestine Demonstration

LOS ANGELES (JPS) —A dem-
onstration against British policy
in Palestine by Jewish pickets and
other persons, in front of the
British Consulate here, flared into
fisticuffs when a man carrying a
placard reading "Americans be-
ware of these Palestine agitators,"
tried to break into the picket line.
The man was identified by police
as Earl C. Craig, chairman of an
organization called Public Affairs
Forum. Craig called newspapers to
deny rumors that he was an ad-
herent of Gerald L. K. Smith.

Gestapo Chief Reported
In DP Camp or Palestine

NEW YORK, (JPS - Palcor) —
Hamashkif, Hebrew Revisionist
daily, received by the News Agen-
cy here, quotes the Swiss Illus-
trated Weekly to the effect that
Karl Eichmann, Gestapo chief of
Jewish affairs who is,held respon-
sible for the extermination of 6,000
European Jews with the coopera-
tion of the Mufti, may be hiding
disguised as a Jew, in a displaced
person camp in Germany or may
even have come to Palestine as an
illegal immigrant.

Releases Expected Friday
JERUSALEM (JTA) — British
military authorities were expect-
ed to begin this Friday to re-
lease large numbers of the 2,000
Jews now held in the Latrum and
Raf f a camps,

I am civilian chairman, will have
reviewed about 25,000 cases of
GI's who were court-martialed,
receiving sentences of from one
year to life.

Jewish Cases Rare
, "It is a source of great satisfac-
tion to me that rarely ever do we
come across Jewish cases. I have
spoken to about four Reviewing
Officers (Jewish) , connected with
the Correction Branch and who
analyze the cases for us, regard-
ing my observations and they, too,
confirm my opinion that one
needs a Larhp of Diogenes to dis-
cover cases of our coreligionists.
"But one day this week my
attention was forcefully arrested
when there was submitted to us
the record of one, Isidore Levy,
who had been given a life sen-
tence. I read the complete record,
wanting to know something about
the young man, and his antece-
dents. What did I find? Isidore
Levy is an Irishman. No, not an
Irish Jew, but an Irish Catholic!
Israel Synagogue
"Then, too, several months ago
there was presented to our Board
the case of a GI with the strange
name of Israel Synagogue. Would
not you think he was a Jew? No
he was a Negro from some obscure
place in Florida. What do you
think was the nature of his of-
fense? A short AWOL and steal-
Mg 17 chickens from an Arab in
North Africa. So I turned to one
of the colonels on my board—he
represents the Judge Advocate's
Office—with this query: "Colonel,
what sentence would this fellow
receive in the section of South
Carolina from which you come?'
Said he: 'This fellow is not bad.
I know his kind and I am in favor
of remitting the unexecuted por-
tion of his sentence'.

"The work I have been doing
since last December is exceedingly
trying. As I have not yet become
case-hardened, at the end of the
day my head is in a state not of
ordinary, but buzzing confusion;
but the task is tremendously im-
portant and I am glad to be of
service. My associates in the Pen-
tagon Building consider me the
most "lenient person" connected
with the Clemency Boards. I
plead guilty to this indictment. I
am happy to say that on July 1
my task will be finished and will
then be able to get from a dis-
tance a clearer view of the entire
picture.
"With appreciation for the
great work you have been doing
and kindest regards.
Cordially yours,
JACOB BrLLIKOPF

Dug Up in Palestine

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Part of
an ancient Greek column inscribed
"to the god, Apollo" has been un-

The style of lettering dates the

the second century A. D. It is be-
lieved • to have stood on one of the
colonnaded streets of the Roman
town of Neapolis, on which the
