2 New Factors Join
City's Fight to Get
More Natural Gas

With Detroit entering the
fourth month of the natural gas
"famine," and Michigan Consoli-
dated Gas Co. still unwilling to
accept applications for house heat-
ing next winter, two new factors
have joined the city's fight for
an enlarged gas supply and re-
duced gas rates, according to Pan-
handle Eastern Pipeline Co.
Foremost are the inquiries
which members of Congress are
directing toward federal agencies
at grips with the problem where
permits must be obtained from ei-
ther the Federal Power Commis-
sion or the Securities and Ex-
change Commission, or both.
Secondly, the organized war
veterans have begun an investiga-
tion as a means of aiding service-
men who are building new homes,
but are denied gas for heating.
As reported in the Polish Daily
News, Senator Ferguson has in-
formed the Hamtramck Council
that he "immediately shall con-
fer with the officials in the Fed-
eral Power Commission in an ef-
fort to secure a speedy approval
of the pending applications of the
Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co.
looking to the immediate enlarge-
ment of the natural gas supplies
to the Detroit area."
Senator Vandenburg hoes ex-
pressed his readiness "to follow
up the petition to the Federal
Power Commission," while Rep..
George D. Sadowski, first Con-
gressional district, has said that
he expects to "make a personal
call upon the Federal Power Com-
mission and obtain full informa-
tion and all the details in connec-
tion with this case."
Officials of Panhandle Eastern
declare that approval of their ap_
plication will enable the company
to enlarge its facilities to deliver
to the Detroit area an additional
nine billion cubic feet per year, or
approximately 25 million feet per
day. starting in 1947.

Disabled Vets Learn
How to Drive Car

Disabled veterans of World War
II who never thought they would
drive again are taking the wheel
with renewed confidence and be
coming better drivers than ever
under a rehabilitation driving
program now under way at Hall-
oran General Hospital, Staten Is-
land, N. Y. Two specially equip-
ped Ford army staff cars are used
in the training.
The rush of driving requests
that followed announcement that
the cars would be available, made
it necessary to set up a complete
schedule of training.
The program is being conduct-
ed by the Paraplegia Section in
which the patients are all dis-
abled through various forms, pf
paralysis from spinal injuries.
The training cars, which can be
operated entirely by hand, are
standard 1942 Ford Sedans. The
hand controlled equipment is don-
ated by the Ford Motor Co.
