MICHIGAN
CONSOLIDATED?

"Are we really short of gas?"

Yes. Because Michigan Consolidated has repeatedly refused
to negotiate a new contract with Panhandle Eastern,
Detroit is limited to a maximum supply of 125 million
cubic feet of natural gas a day. Michigan Consolidated
admits that this is far short of the amount that will be
needed next winter when seasonal use of gas is at its peak.

James H. Lee, Assistant Corporation Counsel of Detroit;
has stated publicly: "Michigan Consolidated wants a pipe-
line and wants to create a shortage so that the Federal
Power Commission will grant it permission to go ahead
and build it."

"Why is there a fixed limit upon Detroit's present
supply?"

The present "ceiling" of 125 million cubic feet of gas a
day was set in 1940 and could not be raised during the
war because of Federal regulation. However, for the
past 16 months Panhandle Eastern has been offering to

negotiate a new contract giving Detroit all ttte gas her
future growth may require. Michigan Consolidated will

not negotiate.

"What about the rest of Aichigan?"

Most of Michigan outside Detroit is served by Consumeri
Power Company. Under a new contract recently com-
pleted with Panhandle Eastern, the customers of Con-
sumers Power are assured ample supplies of natural gas
for the next 25 years. This increased supply will become
available late in 1947.

"What is the outlook for Detroit?"

Unless Michigan Consolidated responds to public opinion
and negotiates with Panhandle Eastern for more gas, the
shortage will last for several years at least. This means
no additional gas for house heating and none for new
industrial purposes. Further, Michigan Consolidated does
not plan to make any gas available to industry on an
"interruptible" basis after 1951.
