An Exceptional Place to Dine Declaring that Palestine is not a British colony, Ben Gurion warned "Herr Attlee" that he must account for British actions there to the nations of the world. He charged that the British gov- ernment had deliberately organ- ized the attack on the Jewish Agency and Palestine workers' or- ganizations in order to control and destroy them. He asserted that the British had attempted to form a new Agency controlled by right-wing elements, but that it could not 111 Z "The Jewish Community Council of Detroit, representing 229 constituent organizations- and speaking on behalf of a Jewish Community of 90,000, ad- dresses itself to the President of the United States to express its sense of out- rage at Britain's indefensible assaults upon the Jewish people of Palestine. "The wholesale arrests of innocent men andd, women engaged in the creative task of building a home for themselves and for hundreds of thoushnds of home- less Jews from other parts of the world; the reckless imprisonment without charges or evidence of the officers of the Jewish Agency, whose status as repre- sentatives of the Jewish people in matters relating to Palestine is recognized by the Palestine Mandate, an international covenant: and the manifestly delib- erate desecration of the Jewish Sabbath: are all crimes of international magni- tude. - We see in these evil acts of the British Government another deliberately calculated step in the plot to discredit and paralyze Jewish leadership, and thus to sabotage: or excuse the delay in, the immediate transfer of 100,000 of Europe's displaced Jews to the only country to which they wish to go, the. country which to them is home. namely, Palestine. The shockingly indecent and irresponsible utterances recently indulged in by Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin constitute decisive evidence of the calculated character of this conspiracy against the Jewish people. "We look to you, Mr. President, in the name of American self-respect, not to be diverted by these machinations of British diplomacy. Nobly and courage- ously. and in accord with American- tradition, you initiated the project for the immediate admission of 100,000 displaced Jews into Palestine, a project which has since been unanimously endorsed by the Anglo-American Commission of Inquiry. We urge you, and the - conscience of America urges you, to persist in this highly moral purpose, and assure the saving of the remnant of European Jewry who survived the Nazi program of extermination. "We request, Mr. President, your intercession and unyielding demand that that imprisoned leaders of the Jewish Agency be released immediately and that Britain's acts of violence in Palestine be stopped forthwith. "We bespeak your good offices, Mr. President. in urging further that, in fulfillment of international covenants and of the demands of justice and human- itarianism. the British Government restore free and unrestricted Jewish immi- gration into Palestine and remove all. barriers to Jewish purchase,. reclamation, development and settlement of land in Palestine. "We urge. .Mr. President, your continued advocacy of „respect for inter- national covenants, which demands respect for the promises of the Balfour Declaration. the Palestine Mandate, and other international pledges, and for the recognition in these covenants of the rights of the Jewish people in regard to Palestine." - LONDON, (JTA)—Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog of Palestine con- ferred with Prime Minister Clem- ent R. Attlee, and said . at the conclusion of the interview that the Palestine situation seemed difficult, but not "beyond repair." During the half-hour inter- view, Rabbi Herzog reiterated his appeal that the British govern- ment and people reconsider the Jewish stake in Palestine. Local organizations were mobilized to express Detroit Jewry's sense of outrage against the attacks by action of the executive committee of the Jewish Community Council which met on July 3 upon request of the Zionist Council of Detroit that community-wide expressions be mobilized in the present emergency. . The Jewish Community Council has sent a wire of protest to President Truman in the name of the 200 organizations af- filiated with the Council. Affiliated Organizations Also Send Wires A request also was issued by the Council to each of its affiliated organizations to send wires similar to the one sent by its executive committee. Such telegrams are being sent with the names of all members of local organizations appended,, to the text. In addition to action taken by the Jewish Community Council and its affiliated organizations, a strong resolution was adopted at the convention banquet of District 6 of Bnai Brith, on Wednes- day evening. In order further to call to the attention of the general public the perfidy of British actions in Palestine, arrangements have been made to picket the British Consulate in the National Bank Bldg. here on Monday afternoon. Leaders, Jewish Vets to Be in Picket Line Local leaders asd Jewish war veterans will be in the picket line and it is expected that a number of Christians will join in registering protests against British actions on - Palestin. After the picketing, a specially prepared resolution will be presented to the British Consul on behalf of the Zionist Council of Detroit and the Jewish Community Council. Simultaneous with the fast day observed in Palestine, special services were held in Detroit orthodox synagogues on Monday evening. The Shofar was sounded and prayers were recited for the homeless Jews, who are seeking haven in Palestine. Press Conference and Radio Broadcast A special press conference of Detroit's newspapers and of the national press services was held with Earl G. Harrison and Henry Monsky on Wednesday morning.
