The War is Not Yet Over
By HARRY KOVNER
The Global War is done and over
(The whole world knows that)
The dead have a bed and a cover
On a free, foreign lot.
But the living ex-GIs
Still fight and bleed
Alas many would like to die
Thanks to mans' greed.
For the living, poor ex-G.I.
There is no pea
ce (he knows that)
No home to be had-cost too high- •
Due to a black market plot.
Forsaken by a thankless nation
Robbed and cheated by human beasts
Victim of man-made inflation
How in God's name can he exist.
While he faced death by day and night
In trenches and slimy fox-holes
The conniving stay at home parasite
Grabbed everything-bag and all.
He gaVe a full measure of devotion
For his 'country and for freedom.
.He risked his life on land and ocean
The reward: no job, no money, no home .
Though shots are no more fired
The bloody war is not yet won
Though heartsore, forlorn and tired
The poor veteran must fight on.
