Preparation for Hedy Lamarr's
second independent film venture
went into high gear when pro-
ducer Jack Chertok signed the
favorite writer, Ben Hecht, to
write the script of "Dishonored
Lady"-Hedy is now at work on
her first independent picture,
"The Strange Woman," and doing
extremely well.

Peter Lorre, at work now on
a Warner picture, says he has
stage yearnings, and besides has
acquired a play that looks as if
it will be suited for his New
York appearance next fall. This
is "Le Spectre," written by the
French Jew Paul Grenier. Peter
is re-writing this in part. How-
ever, this isn't the only time he
has made deals of this kind but
his present seems the most prom-
ising enterprise for himself.

They're telling the story about
the Jewish studio producer who
got his nephew a job in the
script department. A few days
later the department chief ap-
proached the producer and
pleaded, "Why don't you make
an actor out of him? He'll never
be a writer!" To which the pro-
ducer replied: "Oh, I couldn't,
because if you think he can't
write, you ought to see how he
can't act!"

With all the talk about the
atom destroying civilization, one
of Einstein's unpublished com-
ments might be of interest. One
beautiful starlit night when the
scientist was strolling the Prince-
ton University Promenade, he
looked up at the sky and said:
"Anyway, THAT the atom can-
not destroy!"

St. Brendan's Roman Catholic
Boys' Choir recorded the Hebrew
chant, "Ahavas Olom," for the
- synagogue scene with Larry
Parks (who plays the role of Al
Jolson) in "The Jolson Story"
at Columbia studios. Jewish
musicians said the boys' pro-
nunciation of the Hebrew words
was perfect!

Quiz Kid Ruthie Diskin, 11,
is busy writing a book which
will be published this fall by
Dodd Mead and Co. It is a chem-
istry book for children. Ruthie
says she's having the help of her
father, who is, conveniently
enough, a chemistry high school
teacher. Ruthie is doing the
writing and her father is check-
ing her experiments.

Fanny Brice is planning to
start a weekly meeting of all the
youngsters living in her neighbor-
hood. She wants to play record-
ings of her "Baby Snooks Show"
to them in order to get their re-
actions first!

Jan Struther's Latest
Book Aids UJA Drive
NEW YORK -- Calling for
prompt and abundant support of
the United Jewish Appeal, Jan
Struthers, eminent author of
"Mrs. Miniver," singles out the
UJA for special treatment in a
poignant chapter in her latest
book "A Pocketfull of Pebbles,"
just published by Harcourt,
Brace and Co.
The chapter is dedicated to the
principle that we must fight "in
order to be able to live for dem-
ocracy." It is this principle which
Miss Struther sees as the under-
lying core of the United Jewish
Appeal.
Miss Struther regrets that she
cannot force people to • give to
the UJA, "I can only beg you-
and I do beg you, with all the
strength at my command," she
writes.
Miss Struther, who identifies
herself . charmingly as "just a
goy," pays generous tribute to
the Jewish spirit. There is "a
quickness of perception," about
Jews that she admires, "a breadth
of imagination, or a length of
vision, which makes one feel im-
mediately at ease." She believes
"it must be a very great honor
to be a Jew, for the Jews are
a symbol of everything the Naz-
is tried to destroy-dignity, faith,
vision, sensitiveness, wit and gen-
erosity."

Dr. Mortimer Epstein
LONDON (JTA) Dr. Morti-
mer Epstein, active member of
the Board of Deputies of British
Jews and treasurer of the United
Synagogue, collapsed and died
here during a reception following
the induction of M. Swift, new
rabbi of a London synagogue. He
was 66. A few minutes earlier
he had replied to a toast.
20,000 Jews Have Crossed
Into Austria Since October
VIENNA (JTA)-Twenty thou-
sand refugee Jews from Poland,
Hungary and Czechoslovakia
have crossed into Austria since
last October, it was reported here
by Bronislaw Teichholtz, director
of the International Committee
for Transient. Jews. Most of the
20,000 eventually reached the
American zone in Germany.
David May (head of the May
Co. department stores) was play-
ing gin rummy at Samuel Gold-
wyn's the other night. As often
happens with Mr. Goldwyn, he
was losing points and temper.
Finally he yelled at Dave, "Get
out of my house!" and escorted
May to the door. Unperturbed,
David said good night pleasantly
-and almost fell off the porch
when Goldwyn replied, "Come
and see me again soon!"

Gestapo Leader Eichmann
Reported Seen in Prague
PRAGUE, (JTA)-Czech auth-
orities this week were investigat-
ing a report that Adolph Eich-
mann, the Nazi "expert" on Jew-
ish affairs, who supervised the
deportation to death camps of
hundreds of thousands of Jews,
was recently seen in Czechoslo-
vakia.
According to a report reaching
the authorities, Eichmann recent-

in-law, former Capt. Lukas, a

Eichmann is hiding.
Says More Troops Needed
To Maintain White Paper
TEL AVIV (Palcor)-"I do not
know if another division is need-
ed for removing the White Paper
but I do know that many di-
visions will be needed to imple-
ment it," declared Izchak Taben-
kin, addressing a Kibbutz Hameu-
had conference here.
He spoke in reply to Bevin's
address before the British labor
party conference at Bourne-
mouth, England, in which Bevin
said that if admitting 100,000
Jews to Palestine now means
sending another division there,
he is not prepared to do so.
The Hameuhad conference ex-
pressed shock at Bevin's remarks
and called on Jewish Palestine to
unite for the rescue and main-
tenance of Zionism and the free
existence of the Jewish people.
