British Attack Rouses World Resentment

In Detroit, leaders of all Zionist parties, through the Zionist Council,
took immediate steps to arouse public opinion against the outrageous Brit-
ish actions which keep 600,000 Jews in Palestine under virtual arrest.
During the balloting for the World Zionist Congress, on Sunday,
more than 1,000 Detroiters sent telegrams to President Truman urging
that he protest the actions in Palestine of British military forces and that
he secure action for the immediate admission of 100,000 Jews.
All Detroit rabbis joined in wiring the President a protest against
the desecration of the Sabbath in Palestine by the British military and
the arrest of the Jewish leaders.
A number of public meetings were planned to be held this month.
Forces also are being mobilized for the picketing of the British Con-
sulate by Jewish war veterans and others, including outstanding Detroit
leaders.

World public opinion, outraged by developments in Palestine _and the virtual
"arrest" of the entire Jewish community by British troops, was aroused to action
this week in condemnation of what is generally interpreted as a declaration of
war by England upon Jewry.
The invasion by British troops of the offices of the Jewish Agency for Palestine
in Jerusalem, the arrest of Jewish leaders, the imposition of an 18-hour curfew
upon Tel Aviv, the continuation of the curfew in Jerusalem, are among the events
which have aroused indignation among Jews and Christian liberals everywhere.
In Washington, spokesmen for the State Department denied that our govern-
ment was notified in advance by British authorities that the invasion and search
of Jewish Agency offices were planned. The notification did not reach Washington
until the deed was accomplished, the spokesman said.

Orthodox Jews Forced to Violate Sabbath

Orthodox Jews are especially horrified by the latest events because one
of their leaders, Rabbi Judah Leib Fishman, member of the Jewish Agency
Executive and president of World Mizrachi, was arrested and compelled to
ride on the Sabbath.

Occurring on the Sabbath, the "invasion," which took the form of military
maneuvers, had all the aspects of war.
One of the protests against British action, issued by the Central Jewish Com-
mittee of Liberated Jews in Germany, over the -signature of Dr. Zalman Grinberg,
goes so far as to condemn the occurrences as a "pogrom" on the Jews of Palestine.
(There is a possibility that American leaders—headed by Dr. Abba Hillel Sil-
ver and Dr. Stephen S. Wise—will leave for Palestine to take over administration
of the Jewish Agency and to compel recognition of American leadership in Jewish
efforts for speedy rehabilitation of Jews in Eretz Israel and the establishment of
the Jewish National Home.)
American_ Jewry's public opinion is expressed in a statement issued by Dr.
Silver and Dr. Wise, joint chairmen of the American Zionist Emergency Council.

who, upon hearing of the arrest of the members of the Jewish Agency Executive
by the British army in Palestine, declared:

`An Act of. War'

"The arrest of members of the Jewish Agency Executive by the British Army
in Palestine is nothing less than an act of war against the Jewish people. It is
clear that this treachery is not merely another step in the program of terror and
intimidation being pursued by the British military in Palestine, but was conceived
on the highest political level in an attempt to liquidate the Jewish National Home.
This at a time when the British government pretends to be engaged in a joint
effort with the American government to bring about a just solution of the Palestine
problem.

"It is reported that the decision to make these arrests was taken 'on a Cabinet
level'. Mr. Attlee and his government must, therefore, go down in history as men
without honor, as enemies of the Jewish people, who have not hesitated to deceive
the American government.
"We have today dispatched an urgent message to the President of the U. S.
and to our Department of State, inquiring as to the accuracy of the British For-
eign Office statement that the United States government was informed earlier
this week of the British decision to arrest various leading members of the Jewish
Agency. We cannot believe that our Government,' which is fully committed to the
program of the Balfour Declaration and the Palestine Mandate. and to achieving
the immediate transportation of • 100,000 displaced European Jews to Palestine,
would be accessory to this vicious and tyrannical act. We await the statement of
our government impatiently, and we trust that the. President will not only refute
the assertion of the British Foreign Offices as false, but will make clear that the
British action is an affront to the government of the U. S. and calculated to annul
the objectives with regard to Palestine to whi"h it is committed.

. Provoke Open Warfare

"In announcing the arrests, Gen. Sir Alan Cunningham, High Commissioner for
Palestine, stated that it was designed to 'root out terrorism and violence' in the Holy
Land. Nothing could have been more calculated to 'provoke open warfare in Pales-
tine than the Nazi-like detention without just cause of these spokesmen of world
Jewry. Responsibility for the bloodshed and human misery which now seem in-
evitable in Palestine must be placed squarely where they belong—at the doorstep
of No. 10 Downing Street.
"Nor is it Palestine Jewry alone that is involved, for Britain is trampling on the
rights and feelings of the Jewish people throughout the world, to whom the promise
of the Jewish National Home was made. Step by step, the present British Govern-
ment, with fatal obtuseness and unmatched cynicism, is following to the bitter end'
the policy of betrayal initiated in 1939 by the Chamberlain government.
"If it is the intention of the British government to break the spirit of the Jewish
community of Palestine and of Jews throughout the world, it is greatly mistaken.
We know the spirit of Palestine's Jews. They have come home and they - are there
to stay. Brave and resourceful, they are prepared to fight to the last man for the
future of their people.
"As for the Jews of America—we know that their response, too, will be im-
mediate and unmistakable. If Britain chooses to stamp herself by her actions as
the enemy and betrayer of the Jewish Deorle. sT, e must also assume the conse-

Britain in All-Out War to Round Up Stern Group, Irgunites,
and Haganah, Curb Jewish Age . ncy; Attlee Denies
Action Aimed at Entire Jewish Community

(By Long Distance Phone to The Jewish News)

LONDON (JTA)—Prime Minister Clement Attlee told
the House of Commons Monday that the present operations'
by British military forces against the Jewish Agency for
Palestine were motivated by the fact that in recent months
it has become increasingly clear- that the sporadic outbreaks
throughout the country are "part of a concerted plan exe-
cuted by a highly developed military organization."

The Prime Minister said that military and civil authorities in
Palestine had shown the greatest forebearan ce in the face of sabo-
tage and terrorism. Up to this weekend-, he continued, official action
had been on a local basis, directed against those believed mainly
responsible for a particular incident.
In his speech Monday, he said the action was not aimed at the
entire Jewish community.
' After describing the equipment allegedly available to the Ha-
ganah, the Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern Group, Attlee said that
the Haganah was responsible for many incidents in which property
was destroyed and armed resistance was displayed.

.

Jewish Agency Repeatedly Warned

He said that the Jewish Agency had been warned repeatedly
of the gravity of the developments and the danger to which they
might lead.
He recalled that the Anglo-American Inquiry Committee had
stressed the danger of private armies and said that the Agency had
been urged to resume cooperation with the mandatory government.
Despite these wornings, the Prime Minister concluded, the situation
did- not improve — on the •contrary, in the last three weeks roads
and rail lines were sabotaged, bridges blown up and rail lines
attacked.
At a morning session of the Cabinet Monday, prior to the meet-
ing of Parliament, Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery, just back
from a tour of Palestine and the Middle East, discussed the situation
in the Holy land with members of the government.

National Council Demands Troops Withdrawn

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The Jewish National Council, at a meet-
ing here on Monday, demanded the immediate ending of British
military operations against Jewish organizations in Palestine and
the release of the heads of the Jewish Agency and other Jewish
leaders.
A statement by Isaac Ben Zvi, president of the Council, said:
"We particularly protest against the insult to the religious feelings
of Rabbi Fishman, who was forced to desecrate the Sabbath, and
the physical affronts caused him by an officer who slapped his face
and dragged him to a car."
Ben Zvi announced that Rabbi Fishman had begun a hunger
strike in protest against his arrest and that his life would be en-
dangered unless he were released immediately.

All Palestine Jewry United in Protest

The council meeting was attended by members of the Agudath
Israel who do not usually attend, indicating that all of Palestine
Jewry, orthodox and non-orthodox, had united in protest against
Britain's action.
Armed soldiers patroled the streets outside the hall where the
council met.
The underground leaders of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, "Voice of
Fighting Zion," on Monday appealed to Haganah to unit with them
"on the eve of the great revolt."
The broadcast said: "The British make this unity a fact. They
no longer distinguish between the soldiers of the Irgun and the
soldiers of the Haganah."
