Brutality By Officers In Jewish Colony Charged
British and American leaders and editorial writers in
outstanding newspapers in England and the U. S. joined this
week in appeals to the British government to avoid a British-
Jewish "war" and to do everything possible to guarantee
just dealing with the Jewish people in effecting the speedy
settlement of 100,000 European survivors in the Jewish
Appeals by Haganah in Palestine to Irgun Zvai Leumi
and the Sternists to release the remainder of the British
officers who were held as hostages to force commutation to
life imprisonment of the death sentences given two Pal-
estinian youths has brought results, and there is hope that
peace will be restored in the Jewish Homeland.
homeland.
Immediate abrogation of the
White Paper and its restrictive
clauses is emphasized as the
major need for such a policy in
order to speedily restore peaceful
relations between the British and
the Jews.
Must Be Scrapped
Michael Foote, in an article fea-
tured in the London Daily Herald,
organ of the British Labor Party,
emphasizes that the White Paper
is not conductive to peace and
must be scrapped.
While many British newspapers
condemn terroristic acts in Pales-
tine, there is agreement that the
escape of the Mufti from France
is disastrous and that he should
be prevented at all costs from
causing further trouble in the
Middle East.
From Jerusalem the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency reports that
the manager of the Palestine
Potash C o m p a n y's plant, S.
Swerdloff, was arrested as the
center of activities of British
troops hunting for five kidnaped
officers shifted from Tel Aviv
and Jerusalem to the Dead Sea
area.
Discover Arms Cache
Swerdloff was detained after
police discovered a cache of arms
within the company's 25-square
mile concession area. Fifteen of
the more than 1,000 Jews and
Arabs employed at the plant also
were arrested following an iden-
tity check of all workers by 300
policemen. Troops with fixed
bayonets surrounded the conces-
sion while the searches were go-
ing on.
Moshe Kaminer, director of the
company, told correspondents
who accompanied the several
thousand raiders that while on
the whole the police and soldiers
behaved correctly, several had
broken doors and windows and
entered workers' homes from
which valuables and money were
taken.
The Irgun Zvai Leumi was
charged last week with having
planned to kidnap Lt. Gen. Sir
Evelyn Barker, British command-
er in Palestine, in a statement is-
sued by military headquarters.
The Irgun is believed to be re-
sponsible for the kidnapping of
five other officers, one of whom
escaped and two others released.
Seek Irgun Leader
The military and police net
which enveloped Tel Aviv for
two days has been withdrawn,
but small flying squads of police
are still scouring the city for
Menahem Begin, alleged. com-
mander of the Irgun. Zvai Leumi,
whose hideout is believed to be
in Tel Aviv.
One of the two British officers
detained for the killing of Abra-
ham Rosenberg in Tel Aviv on
June 19 has been placed under
formal arrest, it was announced
Sunday night.
A military court on June 22
sentenced Zvi Fixler, a member
of the Jewish resistance move-
ment to concurrent terms of 12
years imprisonment for blowing
up a bridge near Nathanya on
April 12, two years for illegal
possession of a revolver and five
years for possession of a bomb.
It was reported from Beirut
that the Lebanese Home Minister,
Saeb Bey Salaam, had announced
that some Jewish "terrorists" had
infiltrated into Lebanon and that
measures have been taken to ap-
prehend them.
Mufti's Presence in Egypt
Will Aggravate Situation
LONDON (JTA) — Jewish
groups and sections of the Brit-
ish press joined in warning that
continued terrorism in Palestine
will endanger Jewish efforts to
build a national home there. At
the same time, influential news-
papers expressed regret that the
ex-Mufti of Jerusalem had found
sanctuary in Egypt.
The Anglo-Jewish Association
issued an official statement ex-
pressing concern regarding the
violence in Palestine, which, it
said, was condemned by all Jews
interested in the future of a
Jewish national homeland. "Re-
calling the long tradition of Brit-
ish sympathy to victims of op-
pression, the Association is con-
fident that his majesty's govern-
ment will not be deflected by
these events from a policy of ac-
cording to the survivors of Nazi
persecution the measure of justice
unanimously recommended by the
Anglo-American inquiry commit-
tee," the statement added.
The Times, in a leading article,
says the sudden recrudescence of
Jewish terrorism in Palestine co-
incides by the irony of fate with
the reappearance of "the one
enemy to engender."

'IT'S NEW
Jewish Agency leaders, includ-
ing Dr. Chaim Weizmann, its
president, and the Chief Rabbis
of Palestine, urged unconditional
release of the hostages.
Dr. Weizmann, however, asked
the British authorities to coin-
mute the youths' sentences, point-•
ing out that their execution
would not help the situation.
Death Toll Reaches 23
The death toll of Jews killed
by the British in the disturbances
rose to 23.
Among those killed was 35-
year-old Abraham
Rosenberg,
who was shot by two British of-
ficers in Tel Aviv, as he was
walking with his sister-in-law,
allegedly in revenge for the kid-
napings.
The brutality of British officers
and men of the Oxfordshire and
Buckinghamshire Light Infantry
and of police, who forced their
way into the Jewish colony of
Beth Haarava, on the shores of
the Dead Sea, was described by
eye witnesses. The troops, search-
ing for armed Jews following
the Allenby Bridge attack, sur-
rounded Beth Haarava on the
morning of June 18 and erected
a barbed wire enclosure into
which they ordered the entire
male population.
Workers from the nearby Pal-
estine Potash Company arrived
to help the villagers who refused
to enter the compound. Village
women, many children in their
arms, refused to be separated
from their husbands and were
beaten with clubs by troops and
police. One eye witness stated
that a woman was dragged by
the hair. Two men were wound-
ed by bayonet thrusts and an-
other suffered a fractured leg.
Fires at Ambulance
The British commander sent
for a Potash company ambulance
to remove the wounded, but when
it arrived a British officer fired
at it, although it was plainly
marked with Magen David and
Red Cross insignia.
Other villages forced and
searched by British troops in-
clude Kinnereth, Matzuda, in the
hills near the Lebanese border,
nearby Hanito and Kibbutz Man-
gan. Cordons were lifted late
yesterday afternoon from Matzu-
da and Hanita, after strong
forces of police and troops could
find no evidence identifying the
settlers with the bridge attacks.
