`Our Children's Leisure Time'
Summer Vacation a Vital
Period in Early Years
EDITOR'S NOTE: The following ar-
ticle includes excerpts of a lecture de-
livered by Henry Feinbern, psychologist
of the Jewish Social Service,. at a meet-
ing of the Hebrew Parent Teacher
Association of the David W. Simons
Hebrew School, on June 20. This is his
second talk of a series of lectures on
'Pa re nt-Chi ld Relationship."
With summer and vacation time
already here, the question arises
what to do about our child's
"free" or leisure time. The ques-
tion, to be reinterpreted, is "what
will our child do with this period
of comparative freedom from su-
pervision?"
The play our children engage
in. is as much a process of educa-
tion as anything else our child
may do. The difference between
the play period in vacation time
and education in school is that
the latter is formal, supervisory,
directive or purposive and tends
to encourage proper work habits.
Formal education requires that
the child organizes himself to or-
ganize his worl-.
Unsupervised Period
Vacation, on the other hand,
tends to be a period in which his
education or play 'is non-directive,
unsupervised and, at times, un-
controlled. It is a change from
normal education. We commonly
say that the child "rests up" from
the "hard" school year; But play
also an educational process. If
it is constructive it develops the
socialization of the child. It helps
him to learn how to get along
with people.
He is "on his own," so to speak.
It gives him a sense of responsi-
bility for his own time. Actually,
if we but handle it properly, vaca-
tion periods can be more construc-
tive to the child's development
than any other period.
As an adult no one directs your
play. You go to the mountains
and may decide to ride horseback,
play pinochle, read, swim, and do
all those strenuous things you call
"rest." Without actually wanting
to do so, from each of the experi-
ences we learn. We feel that we
have something to do, and we do
it. But we take the responsibilit3r
for our own activity, and we de-
light in it.
Learns Responsibility
It is not difficult to understand
that our child who was in school,
now released, should want to di-
rect his own play and take the
responsibility for his own activi-
ties. We learn to be responsible
through practice. He chooses his
companions, learns how to get
'along with them, chooses his
games with them, and chooses his
time for play.
He finds within himself abilities
that are untouched, and chooses
between those activities he can
ore easily manipulate and the
more difficult. It is a learning
period, the curriculum of which
is of the child's own choosing,
and the undertaking of the activ-
ity of the child's responsibility.
Many parents have the feeling
that: "Now that my child's vaca-
tion begins, mine is at an end."
Actually, this is not true. There
never was and never will be a
vacation period for parents. It is
a 24-hour a day, all year round
job.
Child's Opportunity
It is the child's opportunity as
well as our opportunity as par-
ents. It is the opportunity of both
parent and child to establish a
closer relationship. It is our op-
portunity to know our child bet-
ter, and for the child to know us
better.
Important, too, is the health of
the child. This is the period when
health examinations can be made
without interfering with the or-
derliness of a school year. It is
the period in which the child does
not have to have the feeling of
guilt from being taken out of
school, or the worry that he has
lessons to make up because of
absence.

Smith's Un-Christian Stand
Exposed by Dr. Birkhead
Editor, The Jewish News:
With Gerald L. K. Smith and
his satellites in the extreme "na-
tionalist"‘ movement barnstorm-
ing up and down the land with
their agitation for "white suprem-
acy," anti-Semitism, anti-world
government and anti-liberalism,
it is important for the American
people to keep two main facts
in mind:
One—The claim of Smith and
his associates that they represent
the only true fundamentalist
Christian faith, and that all who
oppose them are enemies of
Christianity, is obviously false
and demagogic.
Two—The claim that these pro-
Smith agitators are attacked only
by Communists and solely be-
cause Smith and his associates
are against Communism is ridic-
ulous on its face since the records
show that the Communists have
paid very little attention to Smith
and his crowd—far less than is
paid by the great body of liberal,
progressive Americans.
Regarding Point One, there are
thousands of preachers through-
out the country who proclaim a
fundamentalist theology just as
conservative as any proclaimed
by Smith and such Smith lieut-
enants as the Rev. Harvey Spring-
er and' the Rev. Gerald B. Win-
rod. Yet these thousands of Fund-
amentalists preachers are not at-
tacked and exposed. The reason
for the attack on Smith and his
,
associates is due solely to their
espousal of a propaganda line
which is suspiciously similar to
the propaganda line inspired by
the Axis before and during the
war.
Regarding Point Two, the
American people should keep*
firmly in mind the fact that the
great weight of the attack on
Smith and his associates :is not
due to their opposition to Com-
munism but to the evidence that
this small coterie of agitators is
out to wreck the peace by attack-
ing bur allies, opposing any suit
of world cooperation, and by ex-
ploiting every domestic tension
which arises.
The majority of those opposed
to these preachers of hate are
men and women of good will
who constitute the mass of lib-
eral, progressive American s.
These men and women of good
will are the people who are de-
famed and slandered when Smith
and his associates attempt to
silence criticism with the dema-
gogic cry that Christianity is
under attack by atlieists, Corn-
munists and Communist sympa-
thizers.
The great body of the clergy
never have been attacked and
exposed for disruptive propa
ganda against the peace and
against racial and religious min-
orities because they never have
preached the Smith - Winrod-
Springer variety of propaganda.
It is important to bear this in
mind when Smith and his assoc-
iates attempt to confuse the
people by using Christianity as
a cloak to conceal their violent
"anti" propagandas.
