Simson Sendler of Flint Chosen
Year's Outstanding Jewish Youth

Simson Sendler, 17, son of Mr.
and Mrs. I. L. Sendler, of 201 W.
Hamilton, Flint, Mich., has been
selected as the outstanding . Jew-
ish youth of the year in Flint,
by the National Federation. of
Jewish Men's Clubs.
A sterling silver medal was
presented to him on June 13, at
the Father and Son banquet of
the Men's Club of Congregation
Beth Israel, Flint, in behalf of
the national organization.
The presentation was made by
Alex Gealer, retiring president of
the Men's Club, who in turn was
presented with. a wrist watch by
the club.

gregation Beth Israel and George
Eisenberg, newly-elected presi-
dent of the club, were among
those who were seated on the
rostrum.
Simson just has been graduated
from the Flint Northern High
School. He served on his school's
debating team, won the recent
Michigan Oratorical Contest of
Jewish Youth held in Detroit, is
vice-president pf AZA, Bnai
Brith youth organization in Flint,
and is active in affairs - among
young people in his synagogue.
He also is a graduate of the Flint
Hebrew School.

Word was received here this
week that Emma Lazaroff Schav-
er, who was a member of the
World Jewish Congress delega-
tion to the displaced persons
camps in Germany, is now in
Czechoslovakia.
Mrs. Schaver, was was. ordered
out of Germany by UNRRA, had
appeared before various groups
of Jewish survivors together with
Dr. Israel Efros and H. Leivick.
The latter two returned to this
country. Dr. Efros' address be-
fore a Jewish group in Paris was
reported in last week's issue of
The Jewish News.
Unzer Weg, organ. of the DP
camp, recently carried a report
of the World Jewish Congress
delegation's appearance before a
group in Nei-Freiman. The del
egation was welcomed by Dr.
Zalman Grinberg and L. Shah- ,
tan.
After reporting the moving ad-
dress of Mr. Leivick, Unser Weg
describe how Mrs. Schaver drew
applause from the audience whom
she entertained with by singing
Bialik's "tinter Die Grininke
Beimelach."
Thirsting for more of her songs,
Mrs. Schaver pleased the Euro-
pean survivors with encore after
encore.

been a community consultant for
the American Jewish Committee.
He was sent with Prof. Herman
Gray and Dr. Max Gottschalk to
Germany and Austria by the
American Jewish Committee to
study the situation of Jewish dis-
placed persons in those countries.

Lewis Neikrug, well known
Jewish communal. worker, has
been appointed director of HIAS
Activities in the Eastern Hemis-
phere, replacing Dr. James Bern-
stein, who is retiring, it is an-
nounced by Abraham Herman,
president of the Hebrew Shelter-
ing and Immigrant Aid Society.

To Discuss Modern

The Ladies' AUxiliary of the
Kvutzah Ivrith, of which Mrs.
Abraham Panush is president, re-
viewed its year's work at a meet-
ing held at the home of Mrs. A.
Selesny.
The organization has a two-
fold aim: self-education, conduct-
ed at bi-weekly meetings, and
fund raising for the support and
advancement of Hebrew culture.
The organization gave consid-
erable financial aid to Histadruth
Ivrith, Keren Hatarbuth, Hebrew
Cultural Group of Detroit, United
Hebrew Schools Scho l a r ship
Fund and contributed to the War
Chest and the Emergency Allied
Jewish Campaign.
In connection with the self-ed-
ucation program, two recom-
mendations were made at the
meeting: (I) to introduce at bi-
•eekly meetings literary discus-
sions dealing with modern He-
brew literature; (2) to recom-
mend to the Kvutzah Ivrith, He-
brew cultural group, that at its
gatherings, where lectures a r e
held in Hebrew, a digest of these
lectures be given in English or
Yiddish.
