LINERS accepted from responsible firms or persons by telephone
up to 10 a.. m. Wednesday. Rates: 25c a line. Minifnum charge 50c.

Next - winter 80,000 Detroit
homes will be heated with -nat-
ural gas, and to those homes an
even greater number of Detroit
families will look with envy and
indignation.
Why?
The - Panhandle Eastern Pipe
Line Co;,• which supplies natural
gas to Detroit users through the
Michigan Consolidated Gas Co.,
which recently announced that it
is refusing to accept further house
heating customers, asks:
"Since this is a municipal prob-
lem and the public demands the
answers, what are the views of
Detroit's municipal guardians,
Messrs. • Jeffries, Dowling and
Lee? What can be done now to
compel adequate service?.
"James H. Lee, assistant cor-
poration connsel and Veteran
champion =of utility rate payers,
has wan for them during recent
years millions of dollars in re-
bates and reductions. Mr. Lee
charges that Michigan. Consoli-
dated wants a pipe line and it
wants to create a shortage so that
the Federal Power Commission
will grant it permission to go
ahead and build it," Eastern Pan-
handle says.
"Mayor Jeffries, after listening
to the gas company explain its
pipe line proposal in a lengthy-
conference on so-called "neutral,
ground", came away _convinced.
He refused to endorse it, saying,
"I still don't have the piCture, but
I do know that we are going to
let the Federal Power_ Commis-,
sion decide on whether the Con - :
solidated Gas Co. shall build a
second natural' gas line into
Detroit."
"William E. Dowling, corp;ori
ation counsel and -former Wayne'
County prosecuting attorney with
10, years' gas rate battling to his
credit, has also expressed positiVe
views on the gas "shortage" and
the pipe line proposal of Mich-
igan Consolidated. He said:
"I think the proper solution is
that -you both (Michigan COn-
solidated Gas Co. and Panhandle
Eastern Pipe Line Co.) sit down;
abandon this thing (Michigan
Consolidated pipe line proposal),
because it. is unnecessary, it is not
needed. You have both admitted
that you can get the gas. This
(pipe line proposal) is not the
answer to the problein, and Tou
know that it is not the answer
to the problem.
"Detroit's waiting public, eager
for adequate home heating serv7
ice, are in acc6rd with Mr. Dowl-
ing's views.
"Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line
Co., through public statements
of its officials and in numerous
advertisements, has emphasized
its readiness to "sit down", as the
city advises, and to reach an
agreement assuring Detroit of
ample quantities of natural _gas
for tis needs for years to come."
