St. Louis Police
Halt Smith Rally

ST. LOUIS—(JTA) — Fearing
that the convention of anti-Sem-
itic groups called by Gerald K.
Smith would result in "serious
trouble," the chief of police is-
sued a last-minute order prohib-
iting holding the convention as
well as a protest meeting against
the convention.
The convention was scheduled
to be held at the municipal audi-
torium. A full-page advertise-
ment appeared in the local press
calling upon the city edministra-
tion to revoke permission for
use of the auditorium. Veterans',
labor, women's and other groups
joined with the St. Louis Jewish
Community Council in protesting
the use of a public hall for un-
American propaganda.
Make Attacks on Jews
Violent attacks upon Jews, a
demand that all immigration in-
to this country be halted until
all returning veterans have found
jobs, and a proposal that refugees
in the U. S. be sent back to their
countries of origin were voiced
at the convention of Smith's anti-
Semitic groups.
Arthur Terminiello, suspended
Alabama priest who was recent-
ly convicted in Chicago as the
result of a riot which followed
an anti-Semitic meeting there at
which he and Smith were fea-
tured speakers, 'attacked the idea
of amity between Christians and
Jews and charged that the Jews
plan to kill all anti-Semites.
Smith demanded "the preserva-
tion of the United States as a
Christian nation."

Half Pre-War Jewry
Of Zhitomir Returns

MOSCOW (JTA)—Half the
Jews of the Ukrainian city of
Zhitomir escaped the Nazi inva-
sion and occupation of the city
and have returned from the
armed forces and from refuge
in Eastern Soviet communities
to rebuild their liVes and their
city, it was reported here. Ap-
proximately 15,000 Jews have re-
turned of the original 30,000,
who comprised one-third of the

pre-war population of the city.
The remainder were murdered

by the Germans.
Sixty-two percent of the men
and women of Zhitomir who are
still in hospitals or are crippled
as a result of war injuries are
Jews. Most of them were award-
ed decorations for service in the
armed forces. Great numbers of
the Jews are employed in the
furniture factories and printing
houses, which were the chief
industries of pre-war Zhitomir.
