550,000 Jews in U.S.
Armed Forces, JWB
Compilation Shows

The fourth issue of "These Are
The Facts," Pa compilation of sta-
tistics on Jewish participation in
World War II presented in pam-
phlet form, was. released by the
Bureau of War Records of the
National Jewish Welfare Board
(JWB), 145 E. 32nd St., New
York. The figures disclose that
550,000 men and women of Jew-
ish faith have served in the
armed forces of the United States
in the course of World War II.
While the returns on casualties
are not yet complete,• close to
7,500 Jews are known to have
died in service. The total num-
ber of casualties thus far defin-
itely authenticated as Jewish, ac-
cording to "These Are The.Facts,"'
approaches 25,000.
Among the pamphlet's illus-
trations is one showing the father
of the late Lt. Raymond Zussman
of Detroit receiving the Congres-
sional Medal of Honor, this na-
tion's highest award for combat
gallantry, bestowed posthumous-
ly on the heroic tank corps man
who liberated a French town sin-
gle-handed.
President Harry S. Truman's
statement to the recent 'annual
meeting of the National Jewish
Welfare Board, pointing out that
the Jewish men and women in
uniform who "fought and died
for victory were motivated by
unity of purpose and faith in the
American way of life," is quoted
in part in "These Are The Facts."
The pamphlet also quotes Secre-
tary of War Robert P. Patterson's
warning against prejudices , and
hates, "the weapons the totali-
tarian gangsters used in their
conspiracy to subvert the world."

L 0 N D ON. (Palcor)—"When
weighing up political objections
of Arabs against the human
needs of those homeless sur-
vivors of (European) Jewry, I
felt issuing 100,000 certificates
was a lesser injustice than re-
fusal to do so," Richard H. S.
Crossman, Labor MP and mem-
ber of the Anglo-American In-
gun-3P Committee on Palestine,
declares in. a long letter pub-
lished in the Tithes.
His letter was a reply to a note
by Gen. Edward Spears and
seven other pro-Arab Britishers,
which the Times published May
21. Gen. Spears and the others
urged rejection of the recom-
mendation to admit 100,000 Jews
to Palestine because it showed
"astonishing lack of responsibil-
ity."
Mr. Crossman points out that
the tragedy in Palestine is the
result of .obligations to both Jews
and Arabs and being unable to
do justice to one without in-
justice to the other. But, he con-
tinues, anti-Zionists see only the
Arab side of the case and do
not consider the moral, political
and strategic difficulties in ful-
filling the Arabs' demands for
complete stoppage of Jewish
immigration • and immediate
withdrawal of British troops.
Whatever the choice, he adds,
force will be necessary for im-
plementing the policy. The pro-
Arab policy advocated in the
earlier letter would give rise to
a long bloody war against the
Jews.
