ACTIVITIES IN SOCIETY

Mr. and Mrs. Louis Solomon and Mrs. Manuel Solomon enter-
tained at their home on Santa Rosa Dr. on May 26 in honor of the
25th birthday of their son and husband respectively, celebrating
the same time his safe return from overseas army service.
. Eighty Detroit girls are attending the convention of Bnai Brith
Young Women of District 6 in Chicago, June 7 and 8.
Mrs. Gertrude Leve Blum has left for West Point, N.Y., where
she will be the vocal soloist at the baccalaureate services at the
United States Military Academy graduation.

Mr, and Mrs. J. Arthur Schiff had as their guests for a week
their mother, Mrs. Bertha Schiff of Cleveland,, and their son,
Donald Wm. Schiff, R.M. 3/c, from Cheltenham, Washington, D. C.
Donald was home on a 15-day leave.

Shirley Miller, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. Benjamin Miller of
Elmhurst avenue, was guest of honor at a bridal shower held May
25 at Huyler's in the Fisher building. Among the guests were many
out-of-town visitors including Mesdames S. Calcon, C. Balcon,
William Rosenthal, and I. Cutler, all of Toronto, and Mrs. S.
Lazouras of Los Angeles. Miss Miller has made Plans for an
early August wedding.
Miss Marilyn Gold of San Juan Dr. was hostess at a luncheon
at Canterbury House in honor of Mrs. Grace Zellman of Cin-
cinnati.
Dr. Dorothy Caton has returned from a visit with Mrs.
Frederick S. Gay and Emma Gay at Biloxi, Miss.
Mr. and Mrs. Meyer Sherman of Hazelwood Ave. were hosts
on Sunday at Latin Quarter to 40 guests in honor of their daughter,
Nancy, who celebrated her 16th birthday. Among the out-of-town
guests were Mrs. Eva Rachleff of Springfield, Mass., and Mr.
and Mrs.' Eugene Saresky of Pittsburgh, Pa.
Miss Sylvia Rothenburg a bride-elect of June 23, was enter-
tained at a miscellaneous shower for 103 relatives and friends at
the Wilshire Hotel, on May 27. The hostesses were Mrs. Sam
Levin, Mrs. Harry Ribiat and Mrs. Sam Rothenburg.
Miss Edythe Kaminsky, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Max Kamin-
sky of Buena Vista Ave., - has completed her freshman year at
Michigan State College: She will leave next week for a visit with
her room-mate, Miss Charlotte Snyder, of New York.
Mrs. Ann Rudin of Hollywood, Calif., a former Detroiter, is
visiting with her mother, Mrs. Bessie Utchenik, of 2505 Monterey,
and her family. Mrs. Rudin was guest of honor at a luncheon
given for 40 guests by Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Severinsky at their
home on ElmhurstAve. She also was entertained by Mrs. Joseph
Severinsky of 18429 Pennington Dr. at a luncheon in the Hotel
Statler Terrace Room.
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Enggass of Cumberland Way have
as their guest Mrs. Enggass' sister, Mrs. Max Heavenrich of Sagi-
naw.
Mrs. Lillian Coblentz of San Francisco, Calif., is the guest of
her sister-in-law, Mrs. H. J. L. Frank of Colorado Ave.
Mrs. David J. Levy of Boston Blvd. has returned from a few
weeks in New York..
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wineman of Hamilton Rd. are spendin
a week in Cambridge, Mass. where they went to attend the gradu-
ation of their son-in-law, Arthur Davis, from Harvard College.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ruskin of Chicago spent Memorial Day
week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ginsburg of
Chicago Blvd.
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Rosenthal of Hollywood, Fla., are
visiting their children, Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Newman of
Canterbury Rd., Mr. and Mrs. Hoke Levin of Boston Blvd. and
Mr. and Mrs. Edwin I. Rosenthal Jr. of Parkside Ave.
Mrs. Herman Finsterwald of Longfellow Ave. has returned
from Memphis, Tenn., where she spent the winter months with
her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dreifuss.
Nancy Levin has returned from Annedale, N. Y., where she
attended Bard College, to spend the summer vacation with her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Levin of Muirland Ave.
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bloom and their son, Gary, returned on
Monday to their home in Sheboygan, Wis., after a week's visit
with Mr. Bloom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Bloom of Tenny-
son Ave.
Mrs. Julian Zemon of Wildemere Ave. left on Monday for
New York City to meet her sister, Mrs. Maurice Landau, who is
returning from a visit in Palestine.

Werner Philipp, San Francisco
artist whose European back-
ground affords interesting paral-
lels and contrasts to his Amer-
ican work, will be in Detroit this
weekend to exhibit his works at
a private showing at the home of
Mrs. Ralph Davidson, 1666 Chi-
cago Blvd., this Sunday.
Philipp, born in Breslaw, Ger-
many, received his art education
in Berlin, Dresden and Paris. For
years he doubled as a painter and
concert singer.
In 1933 he went to Palestine
where he stayed three years to
paint Palestinian subjects. He
came to the U. S. in 1939 and set-
tled in San Francisco. His works
appeared recently at the Bone-
stell Gallery in New York.

Prof. Salo Baron Invited
To Lecture In South Africa
NEW YORK,CTTA)—Dr. Salo
W. Baron, professor of Jewish
history, literature and institu-
tions at Columbia University,
will lecture in Johannesburg,
Capetown and other centers
throughout the Union of South
Africa on the problems of Pales-
tine and the communal and cul-
tural problems of the Jews in
America.
He is to arrive in Johannes-
burg about the middle of June
u.pon the invitation of the South
African Jewish Board of Depu-
ties, central organization of the
Jewish communities in South
Africa.
