N. J. Prexy Accuses
Medical Examiners
Of Discrimination

Charges Lack of Quota Re-
strictions Perils Essex
College Charter

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
move by the New Jersey State
Board of Medical Examiners to
revoke the charter of Essex Col-
lege of Medicine and Surgery,
only medical school in the state,
is motivated by opposition to the
institution's policy of non-dis-
crimination, Dr. . A. M. Koch,
president of the college, charges.
"The only real issue is that of
racial and religious discrimina-
tion," he said. "There are those
who oppose the absence of a quo-
ta system in our college. We wel-
come any impartial survey by
the American Medical association
or by any other competent group,
but we urge that the inquiry be
extended to cover the basic ques-
tion of un-American discrimina-
tion against members of minority
groups by most medical schools.
Columbia university, which has
been accused of using a quota
system, was the subject of a
hearing by the Rules committee
of the City Council, i.vhich is
considering a resolution calling,
upon the Tax commission to re-
voke the university's tax exemp-
tion because of its bias in enroll-
ment.
The resolution, introduced by
Councilman Eugene Connolly,
has evoked a statement from Sen.
Robert F. Wagner calling for
"appropriate measures" to end
discrimination in educational in-
stitutions.
Columbia chapter of Sigma Al-
pha Epsilon fraternity w a s
aroused at the revelation that
the national charter of the fra-
ternity limits membership to
those of the "Aryan" race and
bars persons "either of whose
parents is a full-blooded : ."
The group also bans Negroes-.id
members of the "Mongolian
race." A spokesman for the uni-
versity disclaimed any authority
over the fraternities.

For UJA Is Launched;
Notables Back Appeal

NEW YORK (JTA)—The non-
sectarian community committee
of the New York United Jewish
Appeal officially launched its
campaign at a dinner at the Wal-
dorf-Astoria hotel by Mayor Wil
Liam O'Dwyer, Governor Thomas
E. Dewey, Henry Ford II, Nel-
son Rockefeller. chairman of the
committee, and Edward M. M.
Warburg, head of the New York
U.J.A., were the speakers.
Gov. Dewey told the 1,000
notables present that the Jews
of Europe who need aid are our
fellow comrades-in-arms in a
war which for them began 14
years ago, and which only we,
by our help, can bring to an
end." Mayor O'Dwyer said that
the gigantic problem of rehabili-
tating the Jews overseas cannot
be met by the over-burdened
governments of Europe or U. N.
R. R. A.
Mr. Rockefeller, who presid-
ed, introduced the speakers, who
were heard over a Elation-wide
network of the Columbia Broad-

totalled only 700 calories in or-
der to conserve food for ship-
ment abroad.
