Poppy Headquarters
Opened by Rosenwald
Post and Its Auxiliary

Julius Rosenwald Post and its
ladies auxiliary has opened Pop-
py headquarters in the election
booth on the northeast corner of
Lawrence and Dexter. It is now
open to register volunteers.
Commander Max Ornstein
states that: "Proceeds from the
2,000,000 Poppies to be sold on
Thursday, May 23, by the Amer-
ican Legion and Auxiliary, will
go, in part, to help buy food,
clothing and shelter for the needy
children of World War I and II
veterans. Records show that last
year 23,376 such children in
Michigan were given aid by the
Legion and Auxiliary at a cost
of $150,000.
One of the outstanding features
of the statewide child welfare
program is the American Legion
Children's Billet at Otter Lake
where thousands of orphaned
and unfortunate youngsters were
cared for during the past 25
years.

wounds suffered at Aitapie. His

lipines Liberation and Victory
Ribbon and Medical Combat
Badge.

Stone is the son of Mr. and Mrs.

Dr. Becker Out of Army,
Resumes Practice Here

Dr. Abraham Becker, son of
Mr. and Mrs. S. Becker of 3000
Tuxedo, has returned from active
service and has resumed the prac-
tice of medicine at 76 W. Adams.
In service three and a half
years, Dr. Becker, who held the
rank of major, served for three
years in Europe and Pacific and
saw service in Japan.

JWV Urged to Boost
World Congress Vote

The obligation of every Jewish
War Veteran to participate in the
22nd World Zionist Congress by
purchasing a shekel and casting
his vote for the American repre-
sentatives to the Congress has

Of All-Vet Orchestra

The musical versatility of 10
veterans of World War II has
drawn the group together and
has resulted in the formation of
the ' All-Veteran
union orchestra
under the direc-

Chaplain Arnoff
Killed in Accident

NEW YORK—Chaplain (Cap-
tain) Nachman S. Arnoff, 46, a
veteran of 18 months in Europe
was killed in an Army truck ac-
cident at Camp Kilmer, N. J., en
route to a processing center for
discharge. Announcement o f
Nachman. . Arnoff's death was
made here by Rabbi Aryeh. Lev,
director of the National Jewish
Welfare Board's Committee on
Army and Navy Religious Act-
ivities (CANRA) which recruits
rabbis for service as chaplains.
Chaplain Arnoff, a graduate of
the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America and a member of the
Rabbinical Assembly, was sent- to
Europe on Dec. 31, 1944. He ser-
ved in Italy and just before his
departure he was tendered a com-
munity tribute by the Jews of
Leghorn for the work he had
done in their behalf. For the
past two months he had worked
extensively on rehabilitation for
displaced persons ; with the ap-,
proval of his commanding officer.
Chaplain Joseph Ginsburg of
Camp Kilmer accompanied the
body to Cleveland, where burial
took place, May 12. Rabbi Bar-
nett R. Brickner officiated. A
memorial service also will be
held by the Association of Jew-
ish Army and Navy Chaplains
at the Spanish and Portuguese
Synagogue, New York, on Mon-
day, May 20.
Chaplain Arnoff leaves a wi-
dow. Prior to entering the ser-
vice, he was rabbi of Congrega-
tion Bnai Israel, Chicago.

Shapiro Heads Army

Pfc. Jack Shapiro, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Isaac Shapiro of 1960
Taylor, has been named manager
of the American Army Boxing
Team in Brem-
en, Germany, it
became known
here upon ar-
rival of a copy
of the Bremen
Post Command-
er.
Jack expects
to be released
from the army
soon but will re-
main as mana-
ger of the army Pfc. Shapiro
clothing store in Bremen. Until
his arrival in Bremen he was a
member of the boxing team of
the 29th Division, and had won
all matches in which he partici-
pated. Last year he was Europ-
ean lightweight champ and had
defeated the Canadian army
champion in his division.
Before entering the army he
was active in the Jewish Com-
munity Center of Detroit.

Jack Winokur Post's
Spring Dance May 25

Lt. Jack Winokur Post of Jew-
ish War Veterans, of World War
II will hold its first annual Spring
dance in the Book-Cadillac hotel
on Saturday, May 25. Music will
be supplied by Tommy Marvin
and his orchestra. Tickets may
be obtained from members or
from Grinnell's ticket office.
All proceeds of this dance will
be used in re-habilitation work
for veterans of World War II.

Mrs. Alice R. Gihrian, national
president, visited the Michigan
Department of Ladies' Auxiliaries
of Jewish War Veterans, May
5-7. She was the guest of Eli
Levin Auxiliary, was entertained
at brunch by the state president,
Mrs. Birdie Rosenberg, and was
honored at a dinner by Ladies'
Auxiliary 135 and at an open
meeting.
