to Raise $4,500 ,

Shaarey Zedek will be guest
speaker at the "Kick-off Meet-
ing" of the Ann Arbor Allied
Jewish Appeal next Wednesday
evening.
This year the Ann Arbor Jew-
ish community has set as its quota
the sum of $10,000, doubling the
goal of last year. Heading the
campaign are Osias Zwerdling
and Thomas Cook. Chairman of
the city campaign is Mark Ross.
Mrs. Reuben Kahn and Dr. Saul'
Cohen are co-chairmen of the
faculty division, while Miss
Frances Pearl of New Jersey and
Burton Agata of Detroit head
the student division, assisted- by
Student Director Sam Rosen of
Chicago.
The Student Drive, carried on
through the Bnai Brith Hillel
Foundation, last year netted
$3,100. This year the students
will attempt to raise $4,500.
Beneficiary agencies of the Ann
Arbor Allied Jewish Appeal will
include the Joint Distribution
Committee, United Palestine Ap-
peal, American Jewish Congress,
Bnai Brith Wider Scope, Joint
Defense Appeal (Bnai Brith Anti-
Defamation League and American
Jewish Committee), National
Jewish Welfare Board and the
National Refugee Service. The
student campaign also will in-
clude the Muriel S. Kleinwaks
Scholarship.
The student drive will termi-
nate on May 25 with an all-
campus 'variety show, "Hillelza-
poppin," proceeds to go toward
the Allied Jewish Appeal. •

Passover Celebrated
By Many Local Needy
At House of Shelter

At -the end of Passover, Milton
M. Maddin, president of the
House of Shelter, expressed grat-
itude to the Ladies Auxiliary for
assistance rendered in perform-
ing the traditional services of
the House of Shelter to needy
residents of the city and county
penal institutions.
In preparation for the Passover
at the House of Shelter, the La-
dies Auxiliary, under the direc-
tion of Mrs. Hyman Altman, re-
decorated the premises and re-
newed the • furnishings in the
Home. Over 200 meals were serv-
ed to transients during the holi-
days and appropriate arrange-
ments were made for religious
services on Seder nights.
New underclothing was fur-
nished gratis to the guests at-
tending during the holidays and
the sleeping facilities of the
Home were thrown open to those
desiring to use them.
With the _ assistance of David
Goldberg, Barney Barnett, Louis
Rosenthal, and the Ladies Auxil-
iary, meals were _prepared, de-
livered to and furnished to the
Jewish inmates of the Detroit
House of Correction, Eloise and
Jackson Prison, enabling the in-
mates of those institutions to ob-
serve the holiday traditions.
The House of Shelter continues
to provide food and shelter for
all transients who 'desire to avail
themselves of these facilities. '

Plans Spring Luncheon

Women's League for Sabbath Ob-
servance will bd held at 12:30

Shaarey Zedek Men
Elect Dr. Burstein

Dr. Morris M. Burstein was
elected president of Shaarey Ze-
dek Men's Club to succeed Mau-
rice Seligman, who served three
terms. Other officers are: vice-
president, Nathan Milstein; finan-
cial secretary, Albert 'Green; re-
cording secretary, Abe Satovsky,
and treasurer, Mathew Shufro.
Dr. Burstein headed the 7th
War Loan and Victory Bond drive
at Shaarey Zedek, in which near-
ly $4,000,000 worth of bonds were
sold through the congregation.
He has been active in congrega-
tional affairs for years.

The Men's Club has raised $11,-
500 for an endowment fund for
the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America. It , sponsors . a bi-
weekly lecture and entertainment
of community-wide• significance.

Young Israel Program Centers Around Veterans

Detroit Young Israel's postwar plans will be
announced Sunday, May 12, at the organization's
23rd anniversary dinner at the Shaarey Zedek
social hall. The plans have been formulated with
primary consideration to the needs of the large
number of veterans newly inducted into Young
Israel April 10.

Thomas E. Braniff, of Dallas,
Tex., president of Braniff Air-
ways, Inc., and noted Catholic
lay leader, has been elected na-
tional Catholic co-chairman of.
the National Conference of
Christian and Jews, it was an-
nounced by Dr. Everett R.
Clinchy, president of the National
Conference. Mr. Braniff was
elected at the executive .com-
mittee meeting of the National
Conference in New York. .
Mr. Braniff succeeds Dr. Carl-
ton J. H. Hayes. Serving with
him are Roger W. Straus,
president of the American Smelt-
ing and Refining Co., Jewish co-
chairman, and Dr. Arthur W.
Compton, noted atomic-energy
physicist, Protestant co-chairman.

Over 1500 delegates are ex-
pected to attend the Annual Con-
ference of the National Council
of Organizations for Yeshiva Uni-
versity, to be held Sunday after-
noon,. May 5, 1946; at the Hotel
Waldorf Astoria, New York City.
LOUIS LEVINE; head of the Na-
tonal Couneil, will preside at the
sessions at which plans will be
formulated for participation by
Jewish socjeties in the celebra-
tion o f the formal inaugural on
June 11 of Yeshiva University
the first University of this type
to be established in more than
1900 years of Jewish history.

The monthly Friday evening
get-together service of Congrega-
tion Shaarey Zedek, May 10, at
8:15 p. m. in the main auditorium,
will be in charge of Rabbi Ger-
shon G. Rosenstock. The pro-
gram will consist of excerpts from
the Sabbath service. The ritual
portion of the service will be con-
ducted by Cantor Jacob H. Son-
enklar, assisted by a quartet.

Large Scale Immigration
Is Opposed by Canadians

TORONTO (JTA) — Only 21
percent of Canada's population is
in favor of large-scale immigra-
tion from Europe, according to a
survey by, the Canadian Institute
of Public Opinion.

The vital role that youth must play in postwar
Jewish community construction was outlined for
the Young Israel membership by Rabbi Milton
Aaron, director of the Wayne University Hillel
foundation, at the organization's May 1 meeting.
Dr. H. Raphael Gold will be the guest speaker
at the May 12 dinner.
